If you ever visit the NW corner of Alabama, you are sure to see some "Welcome to The Shoals" signs. You will also see several businesses with "Shoals" in their name, for example "Shoals Pest Control" or "Shoals Lighting". In fact, in the phone book, there are approximately 125 Businesses or Associations with the word "Shoals" in their name.
What you won't see, is an address for "Shoals". Or "The Shoals". If you are trying to get here, your GPS might not even recognize "The Shoals".
You see, "The Shoals" is made up of two counties: Lauderdale and Colbert, and five cities: Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia and Killen. What was once called "The Tri Cities" area, then evolved into "The Quad Cities" is now referred to as "The Shoals".
The Shoals Area Association of REALTORS, Shoals Chamber of Commerce and Shoals Home Builder's Association are all located in Florence, however, these associations are the hub of their respective industries for the entire two county area.
If you look on a map, and trace the Tennessee River through the NW corner of Alabama, it will actually run directly through The Shoals Area, with Florence and Killen on the North side of the river and Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia on the South side of the river.
Looking for Real Estate can be tricky if you're new to the area. For example, don't limit yourself to homes in Tuscumbia, you might broaden your search to all of the above mentioned cities, because you actually may only be a few minutes away. In fact, someone could live in Tuscumbia, and actually walk to a friends house in Muscle Shoals. Then there is Sheffield, which is right smack dab in the middle of it all.
Whether you live in Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, Sheffield, Florence, Killen or even Rogersville or Cherokee, you can say you live in "The Shoals"...
This is Part 1 of a series I will be writing, to share and to help explain the little NW corner of the State of Alabama, referred to as "The Shoals".
