National POW/MIA Day

Today, 18 September 2020, is National POW/MIA Day. It is on this day that we salute the more than 500,000 Americans who endured the horrors of being held as a Prisoner of War as well as the more than 80,000 patriots who remain missing in action.

Massachusetts has 1 (one) Memorial honoring the Vietnam POW/MIA soldiers. The Memorial is located at the Essex County Sheriff's Office in Middleton, MA. Each year I attend the public ceremony on this day. BUT, this year the public event was canceled due to the Covid-19 mandates Governor Baker issued for the safety of the citizens of Massachusetts.

Sheriff Coppinger decided to film a virtual ceremony to ensure these soldiers would be remembered.

Although this ceremony is to honor MA Vietnam POW/MIA soldiers we will never forget 1 soldier across our history that was held as a prisoner of war or is still missing in action.

Hi Michael Jacobs It's the only Memorial in Massachusetts for POW/MIA. The Sheriff's Office did a great job on the video

Grant Schneider, It's amazing what a fight it can be at times during this COVID attack to be able to honor those military members on these special days.

Doug Dawes - No thanks to the Media not willing to report this special day, I missed honoring POW/MIA DAY. Veterans hold a special place in my heart. I can't imagine would it would be like for anyone to be a POW or MIA. Getting them home should be every single President's duty that takes precedence over everything else.

I've met a couple of veterans that have returned to Vietnam with teams searching for the MIA's Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP When there are high probabilities of finding an MIA then the US government and Vietnamese government negotiate a fee!! I just hate it when veterans, dead or alive, are exploited

Doug Dawes - It sickens my heart too. I wasn't a soldier, but vicariously I lived through the stress of the unknown, the body bag counts, and everyone who served was constantly on my mind. I was 16 when I became a penpal to guy in the Army. We communicated by airmail and an occasional phone (echo) call and a few times when he was on leave from the time he left Korea to GA, Germany, and Vietnam. On the day he was released 9/10/70 he promised he was going to go straight to my house. I waited for months not knowing if he made it back home or not. In my mind, he was MIA but months later, he showed up on my door and shortly after that we got married. For better or worse we married until death did he part.

Interesting! I wasn't aware about the agreement between the US government and Vietnamese government. Exploitation is a terrible sin. I pray that if there still are some POW's or MIA's they can come home, dead or alive. To those too young to know or care to know about the War in Vietnam they will never understand. Unfortunately, today's reality only exists on Reality TV or fake news.

My Pam also was a penpal to solider in Vietnam, not me...lol, but when he returned home he took her to dinner and thanked her for writing.
