The environment that your child learns in, is just as important as the content, and the teacher. The environment has an effect on your child’s progression, and so it is important that a teacher has an effective classroom management plan in place. This includes seating plans, where the teacher decides where a student should sit, in order for them to benefit the most. Sometimes, teachers have to move students around depending on their behaviour, their academic performance, and how much they take part in the class participation. Recent studies have told us, that students perform better in the classroom when they have a particular seat allocated to them, rather than just letting them come into the classroom, and sitting where they want.
It is also imperative that the students get the right school chairs to sit upon, and that will provide them with the necessary back support, so that they don’t feel uncomfortable when sitting there for hours every day. Assigning a student to the correct school chair every day, helps the teacher with the management of the classroom, and helps with the students overall learning experience. Before deciding on the seating arrangements in a classroom, the teacher needs to consider the size and shape of the classroom, the groupings of students, and their learning abilities. School is about the kids, but it’s also about the teacher creating a workplace, that allows them to have a good quality of work/life balance.
The following are some of the reasons why we should have seating plans in classrooms, and the many benefits that they offer.
- Effective classroom management - Having the correct seating plan in place, allows the teacher to properly control the students. By doing this, the teacher can put things into place to make sure that incidents do not occur, like two best friends sitting together. What is the harm in this, you might say. These same two kids will be chatting all day, and their learning will suffer as a direct result. Children who wear glasses, or who have some other visual impairment, very likely need to be sitting at the front of the classroom.
- It impacts student behaviour – A seating plan addresses any issues with regard to poor student behaviour. Sometimes it’s as simple as not putting two students together that don’t seem to get along, and also keeping other students apart because they distract each other. It’s all about reducing disruptions, and reducing the level of noise in the classroom. Placing the school chairs in rows, for example, ensures that the students are facing forward, and looking towards the teacher. It is also important that the school chairs are comfortable and are conducive to a child’s physical health.
Obviously, it takes time to get the right seating plan in place, but after watching how students behave and react, the teacher can usually figure out the best seating plan for that particular group of students. School chairs are there for comfort and for safety, but they also play a key role in controlling the classroom, and everyone in it. As a teacher, it will take time to figure out your seating plan, but once you get it right, it will make your life a whole lot easier.
