Have You Seen Her – The Chi-Lites
I have always enjoyed listening to a lot of soul music. At one time my favorite radio station was WYNR, in Chicago, a soul format station that played music late into the night. In those days not every station broadcasted 24 hours like today. Many would shut down at 10:00pm or Midnight. Soul music always sounds better on those late summer nights.
Most of the soul performers were vocal groups known more for their harmonies than their instruments. When the British invasion came along, the popularity of the soul sound waned. But a few of the groups continued to bust the charts.
One group out of Chicago bucked the trend toward hard rock to achieve success with their voices and messages of love. That group was the Chi-Lites. The Chi-Lites produced eleven top ten hits on the R & B Chart between 1969 and 1974. They had two, million selling singles “Have You Seen Her”, and “Oh Girl". Today’s song “Have You Seen Her” topped the Billboard R & B chart and reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. It has a sound somewhat reminiscent of the old doo-wop songs of the ‘50s.
Here is a fun fact. The song which charted up to number three in the U.K. in 1971 was re-released in 1975 and again charted up to number 5. While America was locked into listening to Led Zeppelin, Bee Gees, Elton John and other rockers from Great Britain, the Brits were locked into an American invasion of sorts. Proving a good song can reach across boundaries, wherever they are.
Today’s video is a performance recorded on the popular show Soul Train.
