The Pandemic Silver-Linings Playbook

I suspect at the beginning of this New Year, few of us had predicted a pandemic would quickly take control over the tapestry of our lives, and alter thoughts and day to day routines!

On January 1st, I had mapped out things I had planned focus on in 2020 - Things I hoped to accomplish. There were minor health issues I had been neglecting. One being eye surgery to improve vision in my left eye, and dental procedures! By the end of February, I had taken care of both, and I had painted one of my bedrooms. Closets had been cleaned out, and a mountain of items had been donated.

Lurking in the background of those early weeks, folks began understanding a pandemic storm was picking up steam and headed our way. In mid-March, California and much of the country, was thrust into lock-down. I suspected we would be in this state only a few weeks. I was wrong!

In spite of alteration to many 2020 plans, I have also seen it as opportunity to reassess life in general, and the more important things! There have been little blessings come my way! For example, for the past 14 years, one of my regular activities has been swimming several times a week at a local health club. When the health club shuttered because of Covid-19, I was at a bit of a loss! However, I dusted off my bicycle, and spent more time riding along the American River Parkway, with pleasant views and landscape. Then a few weeks ago, a family member’s swimming pool warmed up. They leave the side gate open for me every afternoon at 4:30 pm, and I go there to swim. It’s closer to my home than my health club is. So, things are working out!

I’ve also had extra time to spend in my garden. My tomatoes and squash have begun ripening, and have become ready for picking this past week.

There's been more time spent exploring the dozens of cookbooks on my pantry shelf. I have promised my family a feast when the pandemic is over!

Opportunities for personal growth continue on in spite of this virus. For example, how many of you on January 1st, knew what a Zoom meeting was? I began learning about Zoom a few weeks ago. And, then, fellow ActiveRainer, Margaret Rome gave me a call and encouraged me to join Tuesday ActiveRain Zoom meetings! Margaret’s call prompted me to purchase a webcam and join in! For the first time, I’m hearing voices, rather than only reading the words of fellow bloggers. I have learned blogger friend, Barbara Todaro of Massachusetts, “Paks da cahs,” rather than parks the cars! How fun!

I predict one the more valuable things many will have learned from this pandemic, is straight from the lyrics of the Beatles’ tune, “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” While isolation has hit some of us harder than others, we have learned to value more, our loving relationships. We’ve seen it as an opportunity to look around and ask, what can we do with extra time which has been illusive in the past? I know I have, and the answers have become treasure!

Michael Jacobs - Me too!  Having access to the pool has made a huge difference!

Carol Williams - Yes, for the most part, I simply can't complain!  When I even begin to get a negative thought about all this, I think of the first responders and what they are enduring!

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I really think it's important for us to all have a silver linings playbook!

Myrl- loved your post and love seeing you at the Zoom meetings. I love learning how to do something new-to-me. I'm so glad that you're able to continue your swimming. It's been encouraging to see families out walking and fishing out at the Preserve where we walk.

And Barbara Todaro We loved hearing about your Mah-keting techniques.

Hi Myrl:

It was such fun to meet you at the Zoom call! Will you be at the next one this coming Tuesday?

Yes, there have been many twists and turns these last few months. Sounds like you have made the best of life while dealing with all that the pandemic brings to our lives!

Myrl Jeffcoat -

Like you, I made plans and started out with a very positive mind-set on January 1. I managed to shuffle around in my boot from my car accident, get my eyes examined, and was preparing for major surgery (unrelated to my foot) – but that suddenly became “not essential,” and I still haven’t been able to schedule an appointment. I had clients preparing to move and now, they won’t budge. But like you, I managed to accomplish a lot of things too.

I think having this opportunity to “reassess life,” as you so eloquently suggested and shared truly does have its mixed “blessings.” Staying healthy is even more critical today than before. I’m glad things are working out for you and that you’re going with the flow to continue with “opportunities for personal growth,” and change. I have not been on an AR ZOOM but others who have written all agree that it’s a great way to connect and learn about business and the way people talk. Although I never heard Barbara talk, I lived in Maine and still have friends from New England. I just love their accent and their charming personality. I think for me, “isolation” has been the hardest. But reading your story really perked me up and I wanted to say, thank you.

George Souto - I think this pandemic has more clearly driven home that when a door closes another can open.

Sharon Lee - Ah yes, the dancing to Native American Indian music on my patio, that almost had my neighbor calling 911 because he couldn't hear the music and thought I was having a stroke!

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - Yes, we are!

Roy Kelley - Thanks for the reblog, it is greatly appreciated!

Grant Schneider - I love the Zoom meetings!

Jeff Dowler, CRS - As I sit here today, my plan is to be at next Tuesday's Zoom meeting!  I enjoyed seeing you too!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - Somehow, I think one of the silver linings has been the earth received a breather.  I look out my window and see the bluest skies I've seen in years!  Fewer cars on the road accomplished that!  I must say when I heard Barbara's accent, I was instantly thrust onto a movie set that took me to Boston, or Jersey!  It was so entertaining!

Myrl, isn't it wonderful that no matter what you figured out how to swim, and not only that but also to bike, too. I was just thinking about it yesterday - no matter where we live, in what geographic latitutes, I have always found one trail that I love walking on, and it is within 15 minutes or less from our home.

Myrl not only have we all had to be consumed with the pandemic but our whole lives have changed... tomorrow I am going to show my Condo listing and have to be a cleaning lady for about 30 min before and 15 min after the showing... sadly a lot of this is fueled by politics and no one really cares about the well being of the average person...just lip service is my take...

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat - Loved your post!  You have always struck me as a person who can persevere through the tough times.  Your blog shows how you have been resilient in this quest.  I agree with you on the Beatles line "Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans".

The older I get, the more I believe that. Ha Ha!
