Annual West Kootenai Auction 2020

If you live in the Kalispell Montana area, and are ever looking for something to do on the second Saturday of June,  you may want to explore the West Kootenai Auction near Rexford, Montana.

Annual West Kootenai Auction - photo of bridge over riverThe auction is conducted by the West Kootenai's Amish Community. The location is about a two hour drive north of Kalispell. Not only was the destination of interest, but so was the journey. Once through Whitefish, route 93 passes through miles of lush forest. When you arrive in the quaint town of Eureka, you'll jump on highway 37 West, drive about 6 miles to the Koocanusa Bridge, go over the bridge and make a right. For the next 14 or so miles, you just follow the signs as you drive a curvy Montana Road to the auction site. For part of the ride you'll be able to see Lake Koocanusa which is a 90 mile long lake which flows over the Canadian border. Beautiful trip!

Annual West Kootenai Auction - text message welcome to canadaFor the record, the location is so close to Canada that I received two "Welcome to Canada" text messages from Verizon. Don't worry, you're not in Canada and don't need your passport!

Once we got there, we were impressed by the variety of items for sale, and the well-run auction process. There were three auctions going on at the same time, one inside the furniture tent, one for quilts/wall hangings and one for the outside items.

So what type of items were for sale?

There were many beautiful handmade quilts which came from Amish communities all over the country. We watched the quilt auction for a while and the most expensive quilt that sold while we were watching garnered $900 and the least expensive item sold for $10. However, that was only representative of a very short time period. There were many quilts still available for purchase when we left, and I am sure, based on the quality of the craftsmanship, that there were many that sold for more than $1000.

Annual West Kootenai Auction - newspaper announcementInside the large furniture tent were beds, dressers, benches, lamp stands, end tables, breakfast bars and more. To give you an idea of what the furniture looked like (since I neglected to get a photo), most items were made from huge trees. Lots of thick, sturdy, solid wood. There was no requirement that you take the items home that day if you won the bid. The facility offered to store them for a few months if needed until you could get up there and carry things home.

Outside the tents were many other items for sale. For example, this year they were selling three cabins. There was lumber for sale, fence posts and some equipment. And then there were three rows of miscellaneous items that were being auctioned off. From old sewing machines and washers/dryers to flowers and vegetables. There were bicycles,  hand tools, bird houses and more.

Parking is free and there is no minimum and no reserve for items. Lunch is available as are soft drinks and bakery items (I understand the donuts were delicious!).

Bottom line: This was a wonderful way to spend the second Saturday in Spring. If you put it on your calendar now, you'll be all set for 2021!

This sounds like a great auction to attend.  I have always been scared to attend an auction for fear of scratching my nose and accidentally purchasing something I can't afford, haha.

Hello Kat - a real taste of life in North Montana(not Canada but it's obviously quite close).  The drive seems as exciting/educational/enjoyable as the auction itself.  So did you buy anything or did you merely soak in the ambiance?

Kat Palmiotti - I never got beyond Whitefish but this area sounds wonderful! I could tell by your writing how exciting this place was to see and visit. This sounds exactly like what would interest me too. It must feel exhilarating to see and do new things and visit new cities where you live. Your energy comes alive in this post!

It sounds like a really fun day trip and I bet there are a lot of unique items at that auction.  I could go for a couple of those donuts.  My wife and I are on a diet.

Brian England - no worries! If you wanted to bid for something, you signed up at the "office" and they gave you a number which was on a piece of paper you could fold up so the number wasn't showing. If you wanted to bid, unfold and raise! Besides, we're not supposed to ever scratch our noses again. Haha.

It was a fun day, Lottie Kendall . We got to do some exploring. I love listening to the auctioneers. "five hundred five hundred five hundred do we have five hundred. ok let's start with four four hundred four hundred Yes we have four hundred" and they never take a breath.

Roy Kelley - I don't remember ever being to an auction before. I did enjoy it!

Michael Jacobs - I went there specifically looking for a bench I could put outside in front of the house but I didn't see anything that fit the bill. So we just wandered around and watched. Still fun!

Thank you Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP ! This was our first exploration outside the immediate area since we moved here. I was so excited to be going somewhere I hadn't been, so it was all good. You would have loved it!

Kat Palmiotti - I definitely would have loved it! Several years ago I bought an Amish Rocking Chair and never regreted my investment. It looks just as good as the day I bought it. I'll bet the scenary was just beautiful!

Vicariously, I am living through the chapters of your Montana life.

Raymond Henson, SRES, GRI - I probably should be on one. I gained a few pounds in the last few months. But nah. Not yet.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel -It was a wonderful way to spend the day and it was sunny most of the time which was even better. The quilts were so intricate and beautiful. I might go again next year just to get a quilt!

We have a similar auction here out in Lancaster County in September, your description fits ours to a T. I love tasting the grilled chicken, falls off the bone and is delicious, cooked by the boys, and I mean boys out back of the auction barns over wood fires and coals. Plus the home made potato chips, yummy. And you are surrounded by all the horse buggies. All proceeds go to support a hospital set up purely to deal with Amish related infirmities.

I didn't see any horse buggies where I was, but the amish were running the show - very well I might add!

Enjoy your day!

I'm pretty sure Canada's border is close and they are not actually welcoming us Americans right now.

I have an amish quilt I bought on a trip to PA years ago.  I think my daughter was in the 6th grade at the time.  Maybe 4th.... long long ago because she turns 32 on Saturday.

I really want to come visit Montana one summer.  But I don't think I'm going to get that far from home right now.  Things are too "up in the air" and you never know when some government is going to close things and all the "social" unrest, I'm just not getting that far away from family.  But it's so beautiful and we do want to come see it in person.  It's one of only a handful of states my husband and I have not yet been in.

Tammy Lankford, - If you ever do come, I would be happy to show you around my area- Montana is very big and there is so much to see!  As for Canada, I actually wondered whether they were open yet and I was thinking of bringing my passport when we went to the auction, just in case we were able to go across and just check it out. But I do believe the border is still closed.

THank you for your comment!
