A Lesson in Patience and Trust

My husband and I have two very mellow, people-oriented cats.  Why are they like that?  Because I was picking them up constantly from the time they were 10 days old.  They have no fear of me.

So in December last year, when my husband and I took in a litter of three stray six month old kittens, we set our expectations much lower on the people-oriented scale.  But within three weeks, we had discovered we had two more lap cats.  Just absolutely lovable.

There was one hold out.  Penelope.  She was terrified of us.  If we came near her, she'd run.  If we needed to catch her, we had to trap her in a small room.  She didn't want to be touched.

Over time, I have had to learn to be patient, and build trust with this little girl.  But just moments ago, I snapped a picture of her, and she actually walked closer.  She wasn't afraid of "the lady making all that noise on the phone and dropping files all over the ground."  She's letting me pet her more and more, and will sometimes let me pick her up.

I am learning much about patience and building trust from this precious creature.  It's hard when I want to grab her and squeeze her, or give her a kiss on the head, but we are getting along better everyday.  I just don't notice it until I take a look back at what she used to be like in December.  Progress is very slow, but we're making it.

Chris Ann, as you know patience is hard. I am much more patient than 20 years ago, but it is still hard for me. Glad your little friends are helping you out in this area.

What a beautiful cat!

Every cat has his own personality.  You just have to give them time and they'll come around, especially if they are indoor animals.

Gary:  I truly believe that everything in this life happens for a reason...though I do need to be reminded of that from time to time.

Annette:  Patience is something  I am lacking in real estate this week.

Lorrie:  I have heard that if cats are outdoor for more than a couple months, they never become friendly, but I'm findiing that false.  These guys are all indoor animals now.

Chris Ann, what a beautiful baby.  Cats have some of the most unique personalities I have ever run across.  They can mirror people and their personalities and we do have to treat each one differently.

Leslie:  You are so right.  I love each of my five differently, yet equally.  It must be like having kids.  You love them all the same, but find unique things about each one to love that make them special.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

I'm a cat person myself. The last cat we adopted was 18-months-old when we got her. The breeder in Orange County wanted to retire this cat from breeding, so she had her spayed, put her into a carrier and shipped her to Oakland. It was too hot to fly the cat to Sacramento. So, I drove the 90 minutes to Oakland and the 90 minutes back home. Poor little thing was scared and petrified. She developed an upper respiratory problem that took almost four months to cure. Every day she had pills and liquid shot down her throat.

When she finally came out from behind the toilet in the bathroom, she was very skittish and ran from us every chance she got. I wondered how she would ever fit in, especially in a family with two very big male cats.

Well, three years later, she rules the house. She rolls on the floor demanding we rub her belly. Runs to the door to greet visitors. Sits with me on my chair while I'm on the computer, licking the back of my head. She's an attention hound.

All it takes is a little patience.

I am working on a male ferrel cat who wandered up.  In one month he is eating breakfast with our other 3 cats . Last week I was able to pet him while he eats.  This week I got some flea drops on his neck. My goal next week is to catch him and get him in to the vet. I believe he was born in the wild and never had a human touch him . Oh and this morning he was rolling over  and being playful.  We will win his trust soon.

Elizabeth & Trey:  Your stories make me believe that progress will come. Guess it's like my Mom always said, "A watched pot never boils."

Chris - What a pretty little cat.  I love all gray cats.  I took in some feral kittens once.  It took a LOT of time, but eventually they were all sleeping in the bed with me and totally friendly.  Keep up the good work!

I've got one like that. She isn't as shy as yours, she will wind around my ankles and purr, but she doesn't want to be petted and won't get up next to us. I am working on her. Her sister lays all over me and rubs on anything I'm holding, and her brother sits on my husband whenever he sits down. Go figure.

Leslie:  Same thing here.   Her brother is the bravest and most trusting cat I have ever seen.  The bizarre thing is that, before we took them in, her brother was the scaredy cat and she was the brave one.  What a role reversal.  It does get better everyday, but ever so slightly.  Maybe in another six months things will look much more improved.

Not everyone's patience transfers to pets and people...thankfully yours does!  The pets and people around you are the better for it.

Anne:  She is still very skittish.  And she's officially on a diet.  She is overweight big time.  Officially she has lost 1.2 pounds in a month.  We're doing great.
