June Challenge...Walking Through the Pandemic
Rising above the pandemic is a bit of a misnomer for Larry and me. It has been more like walking through or, life (almost) as usual.
Because we both are retired, going through this stay-at-home period has had a different impact on us. Our area did not close the parks, so Larry and I were still able to go out for our morning walks...still maintaining the recommended physical distance from others.
Supplies...
Having gone through many hurricanes, I’ve always kept a good supply of essentials on hand. However, this has been somewhat different than going 3 or more days without power.
The hunt was now on not for water or gasoline (as in a hurricane) but alcohol, disinfectant spray, and yes, flour. I knew that this was not a short-term hunting season either.
There were so many items I’d either taken for granted or never had to use a lot of. Clorox, for instance...I had a jug of it but rarely use it. I did discover that when mixed with water, Clorox as a disinfectant is effective for only 24 hours. I also learned that Clorox has a shelf life.
More Green…
There’s not a good substitute for toilet paper and neither one of us wanted to start using large leaves so you can find a good supply of it on our shelves. But we have learned to not be so wasteful with paper towels.
I purchased white face cloths from Amazon and have a stash of them to use when I otherwise might grab for a handful of paper towels. I also keep a few in a jar of water, Dawn detergent, and a few drops of essential oils.
In May, I wrote about another change I’m keeping! It’s hygienic and very green.
The Kitchen…
We’ve always loved cooking and baking for our family and friends. However, with physical distancing, we have missed holiday dinners of 40 or more as well as cooking just for 4 or 6.
So instead, we’ve baked and delivered cookies, muffins, cakes, and bread. That way, we got to see the recipients even though it was from a distance.
Irreplaceable…
The one thing we’ve truly missed has been the hugs from our friends and family, especially the wee ones.
This whole period of our lives seems surreal...so long ago and yet still going on.
We did meet recently to celebrate my niece’s birthday and have eaten out at a handful of places.
Neither one of us is afraid of getting the virus but we still take precautions.
And, we’re very glad that this did not happen 40 years ago when we were living in a one-bedroom 725 square foot apartment!!
