Margaret Brown

Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Margaret Brown/Margaret Haskins/ Margaret Young was born in Ireland back in1828.  It is not known when she came to the United States.  She became a prominent shoplifter and pickpocket specializing in handbags.  She was arrested in Chicago, Illinois where she was sentenced to three-year imprisonment at Joliet Prison.

She was released from prison in 1878, she resumed her career in St. Louis, Philadelphia and New York before being arrested again in Boston in 1883.  Found guilty, she served a six-month sentence at the Boston House of Corrections. She returned to New York where she was again arrested in Brooklyn for stealing a pocketbook in 1884.  After her release three-months later while leaving the prison she was arrested where she was transported again to Boston for stealing a purse.  After being released she disappeared never to be seen again.  Her criminal spree lasted for over 50 years.

While you may not know her name surely, you’ll recognize the nursey rhyme written especially for her “Old Mother Hubbard”.

Good Morning, James,

There must be a picture (mug shot) somewhere! It seems someone else's cupboard was bare after Old Mother Hubbard made a visit.

Good morning, James... for some perverse reason I found myself rooting for this woman... and had no idea about the Mother Hubbard connection.

Tragic but funny that she was the inspiration for the nursery rhyme James Dray . One has to wonder why she didn't seek honorable work after all the jail time.

Tell me it's not so. I would never have guessed who you were talking about and how it equated with a nursery rhyme. Thank you for sharing...

You're right - I know the nursery rhyme bu knew nothing of this story. She certainly led a colorful life. But guess she could have been better at what she did, since she kept getting caught!
