Unbreathable Daze | October Challenge

By

The October Challenge is about sharing stories on what changes we have made in our personal and/or business life from July 1st, 2020 to the present.  We are asked to share what worked and what has not worked as we had expected.

Story #1 - Unbreathable Daze

July 1, 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic continues to take lives and impact the lives of so many people. From the business sector, too many small business owners were forced to close their doors, and many are leaving the State of California.

These past three (3) months challenged me to dig deeper with patience in many ways.

• with myself and others
• with wearing a mask
• with distancing from others
• with not being able to hug people
• with the divide regarding COVID-19

For the most part, I keep silent. I support people who are shinning their light on the darkness. I pass on the negative despite the urge to say something.

And if COVID-19 and the protocols in my personal life and business life were not enough … enter the California wildfires. I cannot allow myself to think about the devastation for too long because it creates deep sadness within me. Sadness is a real emotion that I appreciate feeling – it is not a matter of if I feel sadness but how long I linger there.

Poor air quality combined with triple-digit heat made for many for many unbreathable daze. The heat, the smoke, poor air quality, combined with wearing a mask has had me feeling less than 100%.

We have to work. My clients need me. We do what we have to do to protect ourselves against whatever we face.

2020 seems to be an endless rain of challenges. We rise above. We unite in kindness to help those who need help. While this is not a change for me it is something I find myself doing a lot more of because there are endless opportunities to help people.

This works for me. There are times when helping others does not work out as expected but that is not where I choose to focus or shine my light.

I had a conversation with my sister earlier today.  She is struggling to keep patience with all of the restrictions in place.  Yet, she understands like me.  It's for the greater good!

2020 has been a really challenging year.  Each day seems to bring another outrageous chapter to the collection of days on the calendar!

It absolutely is for the greater good. Myrl Jeffcoat - I wonder how many people would not wear a mask if it were not required to enter stores, and other places.

We'ere in this together and with masks, kindness and a glass of wine we'll get through it all as tough as it truly has been for just about everyone I know.

Kathleen patience is becoming a shorter and shorter drive for me these days, so thinking before I speak has become more of a need then ever before.

I can relate.  Many times I've had to step away from my laptop - some of the 💩 just gets to be too much ... in a pressure cooker too long and we all know what happens.  Boom! Explosion.

Feeling negative emotions are normal and natural ... I just don't want to stay there very long.

Good morning.

This has indeed been a very challenging year. Embracing the positive is a "must" in order to stay focused on moving forward. And helping others can help us as well.

Hi Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist, my heart goes out to those who live near the fires and affected by the poor air quality on top of everything else we had to face this year. You said something we should all embrace "we unite in kindness". Regardless of our opinion, as a nation, we must unite.

Uniting individually and collectively will cause big effects.  The divide and the devastation all around are speaking to us ... who is willing to listen and who cares. Beth Atalay

Dear Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist - Your Title wasn't just an eye-opener, it was an eye, nose, and mouth choker! No joke! The challenges, the courage, the circumstances that are causing deep sorrow goes behind what many people can endure. The people from CA have been tested, trespassed by raging fires and taunted by political rhetoric. Meanwhile the widespread pandemic illustrates what hell is like on earth.

Your heartfelt personal story goes straight to the heart and yet you still uncover your heart, your tender heart and all the compassion you have for caring about people. Your clients can be proud of you and know that you would never let them down. You are a woman, a crusader of mercy who fights back with faith, determination and survival skills that you've learned over the years of many challenges.

We shall overcome!

Great post, great attitude.  We are living through a Darwin moment in modern history and it's testing us to adapt and change in order to survive.  We are also being forced to accept that some things will not return to "normal" any time soon.  Our mindset will determine the outcome more than the sum of the external forces.  Keep the faith, keep moving forward, keep making adjustments and keep setting the example for others to follow.  "We are made to persist.  That is how we find out who we are." ~Tobias Wolff

Perfect words Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP ... beyond what many can endure. I cannot watch the riots and fires on TV or on FB feed. Mix in the hate and the divide over many things and the inability to endure is understandable.

We shall overcome!

Hi Kathleen,
I know you approach all things with kindness. However, I think we are all so much more aware of an even greater need these days as everyone is being pushed to their limits in so many ways.  Thanks for sharing your story.

The smoke from the fires made it all the way to NH. It made for some bright sunsets and drowned out the sun during the day. Those with breathing difficulties suffered here as well. A cold front came down and cleared the air. As for COvid, I have many thoughts, most which i keep to myself and get out there and work as our market is just crazy busy. I need to sit down and write my post for this challenge as well. Putting into words are not always so easy

I'm not an incredibly religious man however the tales of the Bible can be helpful in trying times. The story of Job is what comes to mind when thinking of these times. God stripped a prosperous man of everything he had in order to test his faith and when nothing shook that faith and Job was at rock bottom, God returned to him his wealth and much much more. If nothing else, the story speaks on resolve and unshakeable faith in a higher purpose. Perhaps there is something we can learn from this tale. Perhaps  2020 is our test.

I love that you shine your light and unite in kindness, Kathleen! I totally agree with moving on past the negativity. I think that is what has led to a lot of the depression that many are experiencing - they're lingering too long in the negativity.

I know it's corny but, my motto remains, mind-over-matter! I do my best to push past the negativity so it doesn't stick with me!

Fantastic, thought-provoking entry for this month's challenge. I enjoyed every word of it!

I too feel sad for those people who have lost their homes to the fires--the small businesses, the service workers, the pollution--changes must be made in the environment and new building.
