Throwback Thursday: The Apple of my Eye

Haralson apples from Stillwater MN

We had a wonderful package arrive in the mail today, a shipment of 20 Haralson Apples from Aamodt's Apple Farm in Stillwater, MN.

We lived in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area of MN for about 2 1/2 years, quite a few years ago, and often went to the charming town of Stillwater, on the St. Croix River between MN and WI. There were some neat shops and restaurants there and we also discovered the area orchards.

In particular we grew to love Haralson apples - they have been hard to find elsewhere, even when living in apple country in suburban Boston (while we can go pick apples in Julian CA in the mountains an hour from Carlsbad, they just don't compare) so every now and then we order a box as a treat.

Aamodt's also has Honeycrisp apples which are also a fave, but we can get those here in the stores occasionally. The Haralson apples always bring back fond memories of living in MN (despite those cold winters).

Hello Jeff, I have never heard of Haralson apples before reading this post.  It is a beautiful thing to be able to order things online and have them shipped to our front door. Enjoy your apples!

Hi Jeff,  Those are some great looking apples.  It's always nice to re-visit those good old times.  Honeycrisps are one of our favorites here, as well.

Hi Jeff-  I'm familiar with Honey Crisp apples but not Haralson apples!  I buy Honey Crisps and Fuji apples.

Morning Jeff.

When we moved to our current home, my wife planted an apple tree.  This year it bore the fruit, however they are small, but still tasty

Hi Jeff... first time I've heard of this variety of apple. Then again, I'm not a big apple eater... so really relate to only maybe three or four varieties.

Those apples certainly look delicious!  I have never considered ordering apples, I just pick out the ones that are on sale at the grocery store, haha.

The Haralson apple was introduced by the Minnesota Horticulture Research Center in 1922. It is named after Charles Haralson, superintendent of the University of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Farm.

Hi James Dray  Small is OK as long as they are tasty.

Thanks Joan Cox  We've already eaten a couple, are taking some to both our daughters, and I think a pie is planned next!

Jeff I have never had a Haralson apple, but I have had Honeycrisp.  In fact a local orchard about 7 miles from me grows them, they are my favorite, especially picked fresh off the tree.

We love apples and have been to apple country in Southern California as well.  In Oregon we have Hood River which produces some wonderful varietals, but I cannot recall Haralson apples.
