This bit of information from the weekly Town of Addison newsletter caught my attention:
Upcoming Public Hearing
The following Public Hearing will take place during the October 13 {2020} Council Meeting at the Addison TreeHouse, 14681 Midway Road. The agenda will be posted here three days prior to the meeting.
Case 1816-Z/Addison Senior Living. Public hearing on a recommendation regarding an ordinance changing the zoning on a 11.607-acre property located at the southwest corner of Dallas Parkway and Excel Parkway, from PD, Planned Development, to a new PD district in order to allow a senior living development and future office development.
I have long been a supporter of bringing senior housing to Addison. When I served on one of the Bond Committees many years ago, I was on the sub-committee (and only member) looking into the topic.
I am 1000% behind the idea of senior housing. There are too many older Addison residents, when faced with the decision on where to go when they can't or don't want to deal with a house, the maintenance, the taxes, etc that go along with home ownership, who don't have any opportunity to remain in Addison. Those of us who live here don't want to leave.
The location for this proposed facility, however, is far from ideal. Yes, it's close to a hospital, but it's not near anything else except the heavily traveled Dallas North Tollway. I understand that the developers want to give the town a park, but that park won't be near the facility for the seniors to enjoy. There are better locations, nearer to grocery stores, trails, existing parks, and the Addison Athletic Club where there are activities specifically for seniors.
The former Crowne Plaza Hotel has been shuttered. In addition to the hotel, there are several parking garages and surface lots on the property. The adjacent currently-occupied properties are on the radar for future redevelopment. This would, in my opinion, be a more suitable location for senior housing.
There is also a much maligned "extended stay" hotel just north of Belt Line Road, on Marsh Lane. There are lots along Arapaho Road, west of the bridge, north of Belt Line. There may be opportunities in Vitruvian Park.
If this facility is allowed, I encourage the Town of Addison to also investigate additional locations for other, competing senior housing alternatives. It is, after all, The Addison Way.
