John Adams Hyman was born near Warrenton, North Carolina back in 1840.  He received no formal education.  In 1861, he was working as a janitor for a jeweler.  The jeweler taught him how to read and write.  After the American Civil War, he returned to North Carolina where he worked as a farmer pursuing elementary studies.

He was recognized for his leadership being elected as a Republican for the North Carolina Senate serving from 1868 to 1874.  In 1874, he was elected to the 44th United States Congress from North Carolina 2nd congressional district.  He lost his reelection when he returned to his agricultural pursuits.  In 1877, he was appointed as a special deputy collector of internal revenue for the 4th district of North Carolina.  Later he moved to Washington D.C. where he worked for the United States Postal Service.  He died in 1891, he was 51.

What you may not know about John is that he was born into slavery.  He overcame that being the first African American to represent the state of North Carolina.

Good morning again, James... it's always sad to me that people like this often die so young. Makes you wonder what more they could have accomplished if they lived longer.

That's very cool (except for how young he died) James Dray . Of course the second anyone mentions North Carolina I loose my focus on the story because I can only think of the Goddess of NC Nina Hollander  .

Hello James - like Nina Hollander, when I read about someone who has died at a relatively young age, I do wonder "what might have been".

I am not much of a history buff, but I think I would find it interesting to know the differences between why people considered themselves republican or democrat back then compared to today's way of thinking.

Hi James Dray - I just saw some other comments and they said the same as I am going to say...he died way too young. Being able to read and write was a key component of his success.

Hi James- and I have to agree with Nina Hollander it is such a shame that he died so young. Think of what more he would have accomplished.

John Adams Hyman repeatedly broke laws prohibiting his education so he could learn to read and write, and as a result, was sold at least eight times.
