Good news, bad news, who knows?

There is a story about a farmer we used to teach in the seminars. See if you can figure out the reason for having the students learn this.

Once upon a time there was a farmer. He had a horse he used to pull his plow through the fields that he would farm. One day that horse ran away. The townspeople came by and they said, “Gee, that’s bad news.” The farmer said, “Good news, bad news, who knows?”. Three days later his horse returned with three strong mares. Now the farmer could plow through much more land. The townspeople came by and they said, “Gee, that’s good news.” The farmer said, “Good news, bad news, who knows?” A few weeks later the farmer’s son was plowing through some tough land with three of the horses. Suddenly the horses became spooked and started to run off. The son had the reins wrapped around his arms and so he was dragged helplessly through the fields breaking both arms and both legs. The townspeople came by and they said, “Gee, that’s bad news.” The farmer said, “Good news, bad news, who knows?” While in the hospital recuperating, the young man fell in love with a beautiful nurse and the decided to get married. The townspeople came by and they said, “Gee, that’s good news.” The farmer said, “Good news, bad news, who knows?”

The point is this. We may think we know in the moment if something is good or bad. Only time will tell.

There is a story about a Monica O’Leary. She worked for a firm called Cantor Fitzgerald. She had been laid off one day. So, obviously, she didn’t go to work the next day. That next day was September 11, 2001 and her office was in the World Trade Center. The HR people that would process the paperwork all perished in the buildings. Monica never had her paperwork processed for the layoff. In fact, she rejoined the firm after the attacks as she had never been taken off the payroll.

“There will be good days and there will be bad days. Seldom will we know which is which.”

Maybe one day we will look back at this year and be forever grateful for a blessing that came from it.

Hi Rocky:

This was a thought-provoking post. There are always different perspectives to any situation, from the one most directly affected to those observers who see things from a variety of view points. Can you say one viewpoint is really right? It depends. As another example we will all look at 2020 in different ways, depending on our perspective and what may have specifically happened.

I just absolutely love this story.  I read it yesterday before it was featured and just read it again.  I look forward to reengaging some agents that I worked with this year.  Seems like everyone is a little uptight and after you get through the initial "getting to know you stage" things progress more smoothly.

Great post, yet, optimistically every challenge opens an opportunity for a solution and better outcome, so, it depends on how you respond, doesn't it?

And sometimes Kimo Jarrett it is just perspective that takes what we thought was bad news and shows it that it re3ally was good news. Kind of like the old saying, when one door closes, another door opens.
