Colorful People Create Colorful Surroundings

Two of my very favorite clients have done business with me since 1989.  They moved to Flagstaff (where I started my real estate career) after the earthquake in San Fransisco. They ended up buying a home right around the block from me and we became good friends. Both were very colorful people in their own right.  He was a graphic artist and writer and loved all kinds of mechanical toys.  She was a landscape artist extraordinaire and loved decorating her home and cooking up fabulous dinners.

Fast forward, I sold their home and they moved to Phoenix in 1993. I moved to Phoenix that same year to be closer to my family. It was a bonus to see them! Once again they bought another home and stayed there until 2001. After the  twin towers fell they felt it was time for a change. Real estate had slowed down for a few months so I spent several weeks helping them paint and spruce up their home for sale.  As I mentioned, she was a colorful decorator...to say the least!  We had quite a bit of 'toning down' to do with that house.  It sold and it was on to their next home.  I found them a very  unique home with a lot of character - which fit them perfectly!

Nora and Geoffrey

Nora and Geoffrey

All went on fine for them for about  12 years or so. Sadly he developed severe MLS and was forced to move to a cooler climate and live with family.  She, sadly, developed brain cancer and other issues and had a heck of time keeping things going on her own.  Both Gary and I were over at their home quite often.  There came a point when her husband knew, as did we, that he needed to sell the home and find her an assisted living place where she'd be safe.

He found a nice home for her, where she could continue playing in the garden and be outside. Perfect.  Her husband was so relieved she was in a safe place.

But now, the house was a totally colorful place - and I mean TOTALLY colorful place.  Even all the wall plates were painted in extraordinary patterns and colors.  Looking at the home as a whole  decorated, it was stunning and way beyond unique.  But once again it was time to 'tone it down'.  That was a sad thing for me to do. We all knew that would be the last time she'd make her visions come true in a home. And end of an era. Brings tear to my eyes just thinking of that...

It took our crew of guys at least a month or two to get the home show ready.  But when it was complete, it looked stunning.  So good in fact the neighbors decided to buy it, and they did.  We had staged the home with some of our inventory and I remember saying to Gary, none of that is coming back to the warehouse. And low and behold guess who bought all the furniture and decorations?   The buyers!  I didn't have the heart to show Nora (the seller) the virtual tour. That would have made her very sad - me too.

But, both Geoffrey and Nora were very happy to know their long time neighbors would now take care of the home and gardens as they did.  So it did have a feel-good ending for them.

Real estate is not just about 'selling' homes by a long shot. It's about caring about people, making life-long friends and creating many good memories together. I have been blessed to re-create this many, many times with people who started out as clients and are friends to this day. And, the fun part is many of them all got to be friends with each other too over  the years!

Our wonderful group of friends hasn't been able to gather in a group together this year.....but we're hoping that soon we can. During this 'down time' we all  keep in touch and talk about future adventures and  how things are going during this crazy period.  Life will get back to 'normal' once again....and we all are holding that vision. My prayer for all of these wonderful people is that they remain happy and healthy.  Several of them are in their 70's and 80's and I look forward to hugging them in particular! They've been at home this entire time.

So you see, real estate is all about life and loving people. And it's all about helping families turn a house into a home full of love and special  memories. What a fabulous business I've  been in for over 30+ years. I love real estate because it's all about the people!

I totally agree that real estate is all about the people and relationships. I have made some amazing friends and love that aspect of this business!

Enjoy your day.

Dear Anna,

Very touching. Geoffry & Nora sound like they were a hoot. Too bad they had to sell and move out of your life.

That is such a beautiful story Anna.  What a great person, friend and realtor you are.  I love your last paragraph:  So you see, real estate is all about life and loving people. And it's all about helping families turn a house into a home full of love and special memories. You are a very special person and what a blessing to you and your clients. I love this story!

Hey Anna,
Isn't it awesome that we are in the relationship business and not some "transactional" algorithm business?  I know you have built a huge circle of friends from real estate clients and it is so fun and rewarding.  The need for people like you in the business will never go away!  Thanks for sharing your story and kudos to you for caring so deeply, as always!

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS her home was an expression of her joy of creating and there wasn't a chance I wanted to see her 'work of art' wiped away.  It was a sad time and better to leave it the same in her mind.  Yes that is the beauty of our business - we love on our clients that appreciate that style and keep it all business if they prefer things that way.  And BTW Missy....talk about taking the bull by the horns  kind of gal....that's you in spades!!

Hi Michael Jacobs real estate is so both a relationship and connections business. A great deal of our clients came from connections and referrals all these years. This real life story is one that started at almost the beginning of my career and to this day I am grateful to have meet these two.  I miss them both.

Hi Kat Palmiotti it's been my experience in life that there are far more really amazing people in the world than not.  And aren't we lucky to be in a business where we have the opportunity to meet and get to know so many people!

Thanks that's the plan!  You have a great weekend as well!

Hi Dorte yes they definitely a hoot - both of them! It was tough to see both of them having insurmountable health issues.  But they both carried on as best they could manage.  I miss them both.

Hi Brenda J. Andrew these two had a very unique and colorful relationship since the day they met in San Fransisco all those years ago! Writing about them and honoring their legacy brings them alive again, if only in my memory.  The gift to me is knowing and realizing how many people I've been blessed to meet and know through real estate.  Pretty amazing.

Hi Joy Daniels they were full of life and at times we never knew what to expect that day!  Quite different and really very cool perspective on life. I enjoyed the conversations immensely.  Happy ending, well not exactly what I had hoped for them but it was what was and we did what we  could to help them in the best way.

Thank you Carol Williams and yes isn't it great!  Although I can go all out transactional  if need be!  As I know you can as well. As Debe Maxwell, CRS  says, some of us are 'take the bull by the horns' gals!   As was Nora - if she wanted something done, it was done! There are no obstacles!
