That's my client!

By
Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

Back in the day, when we actually used to spend time in our offices, there was an agent in ours who claimed that each and every client belonged to him.

"That's my client... I met them at the farmer's market... My daughter introduced them to me... we talked at our open house... I've shown them several properties..." you get the idea.

One day, this agent was sitting at his desk, close to the front of the office.  He saw a lady walk into the office, and walk straight back to a female agent's desk, sit down and begin chatting.

He stewed for a while, trying to remember where he'd seen that lady before... and suddenly he had his 'aha' moment.  He "knew" it was his client, and she was 'cheating on him' with another agent.

He picked up the phone on his desk, and dialed the other agent's phone.  When she picked up he immediately made his usual claim: "That's my client you're sitting with!".

She calmly replied "Hmm... that's very interesting... since she's MY sister!"

Boom.

Love it, love it, love it. We have two brothers in our area, who whenever you call them on a property, always say, "There's a lot of interest in that". I even joke they say that even if you ask them how they are.

Alan,

How funny!  In my first real estate (Ron's second), we had our own office.  One day I was talking to a store owner who wanted to open more stores.  After I set up an appointment to view several locations, one of the agents who heard her me mention her name to our broker, "exclaimed, that is my client, I shop there!"  And the broker said, "Did she call you?"  LOL. A

That's my client... 'cause I waved at her while I was shopping once... and she waved back!"  LOL!

Boom is right, Alan. That's a great story - made me laugh. When I first started in RE in 2002 we had someone in our office in Cambridge, MA who was like that.

We had an agent who would confront any agent who dared to contact or list in her neighbourhood.  She considered it her private farm.

HA .... oh the days of fighting for that elusive client, that really could care less about you being the first real estate professional they saw 6 months ago.  Thank goodness that we have progressed to the proper legal and real estate law in some States, to clear up some of these relationships.  There are still those that violate those laws and rules today... at least we have a clearer process to clean it up.

oh... we had 'proper legal' back when this occurred, too.  This guy, though... had his own rules.

Hi Alan- somehow there seems to be one of these in every office and not just real estate. I had a consultant who worked for me who would steal the applicants (I staffed offices) of others.

Good grief.  I am familiar with the personality, though from my days selling diamond engagement rings.  It was a well known fact that if someone entered, a gal named Yen was going to lay claim to them.  Our running was she probably passed them in traffic on the way there.  Don't miss those days at all.
