Elijah Iles

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Elijah Iles was born in Fayette County, Kentucky back in 1796.  He borrowed some money from his father establishing a cattle ranch in the eastern part of the states where he became wealthy.  In 1818, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri Territory to open a store.  He finally settled in Springfield, Illinois in 1821.

He was one of the first three settlers to the town, where he opened up the first store.  He was the first postmaster, elected to the Illinois Senate.  In 1831, he enlisted as a private for the Black Hawk War, rising through the ranks to make captain.   In 1839, he built the largest hotel in the state, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service in 1978.  He died in 1883, his burial place is in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

What you may not know about Elijah is that during the Black Hawk War he commanded someone you may have heard of Abraham Lincoln.

Good morning James,

One Indian War I am unfamiliar with.

I wonder if this is where the name came from for the attack helicopter.

Make yourself an astonishing day.

Hello James - when I saw Springfield Illinois in your post, I did think he might have some type of association with Abraham Lincoln.

Abe saw no action did his thing.  My room mate did his duty in Vietnam as a typist and a jeep driver for a battalion commander. His only hazardous duty was smuggle goods out of PX selling on the black market.

Elijah Iles was quite an achiever. An entrepreneur, cattle rancher, soldier and military leader. He certainly deserves a place in history.
