On Dating

Architecturally Speaking

I guess I am what some might call a serial dater.  Of architecture and buildings, that is.  Design elements and features too.

Whenever I walk I take notice of buildings.  Residential and commercial.

I look at the uniqueness of each as well as any similarities. Are there any influences of other structures or styles in evidence?  Has a particular one been remodeled?  Even remuddled at times as I have labeled some on occasion - you know a mash-up of mixed jobs that have occurred over the years.  Almost haphazardly.  Seemingly without a specific plan.

I take notice of such things.  For obvious curiosity and because I find the practice of observing rather fascinating.  Living and learning.

As I walk, I also wonder of the age of the original construction and if there may be clues in evidence of that date and any subsequent alterations.  A match made in heaven or some hellish example.

Who am I to say?  After all, I am a mere serial dater of such things and while I may opine, it really doesn't make a difference.

Rocky Dickerson - Southern California is fortunate in that way even though it may be known for being relatively "new" compared to other places.

Joan Cox - I am happy to learn about the title prompting a chuckle.  I guess, my "work" is done.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - I am remember my first visit to New York City - it was a place I had longed to visit.  It definitely did not disappoint.

Sharon Lee - indeed I did.

Michael- well, I had no idea what journey you were taking us on today but I enjoyed where it went. Houses can be dated (I'm thinking mid-century) and some have that classic appeal.

Michael Jacobs - Although I've never thought about it before, I am a serial dater too. There are so many different architectural styles that I pay attention to and can't help but notice and stare at in awe. To create a building from an idea on paper is quite an achievement!

Kathy Streib - as a stager, you likely have encountered many homes that are eclectic in their style.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - "it" happens to many of us.   It brings new meaning to "awesome".

Morning Michael.

While sometimes I do wonder what the original concept was, I rarely, if ever consider those in the way you do.

Call a Marana neighbor, I'm THERE!

I love the double ententre.  I get a lot of calls and folks don't want an "older" home here in Tucson as criteria.  Older meaning 20-30 years, which isn't old at all!  I come from Green Bay Wisconsin where some of the finest homes in DePere/GreenBay are quite dated!  All in the eye of the "dater" I guess.

Serial dater.... You have such an interesting way of putting things!

I don't know the different architect types or styles at all, but I do enjoy seeing interesting and unique homes while out and about.

Sharon Tara - "interesting".  I can take that.  Despite having some books which supposedly can help identify different styles, there are so many nuances that make actual identification beyond my scope of knowledge.  I enjoy the variety and the uniqueness as well as those moments where I can actually authenticate(or notice) some feature.

Love the serial dater term. Clever. I always love looking at local architect. I'm sure you've seen Santa Barbara. IMHO, one of the most beautiful cities - so cohesive and harmonious with color and building design.

One of the biggest disappointments to me as a real estate agent is walking into a lovely period home and seeing updates that don't stay true to the home's character.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - the similarities between Pasadena and Santa Barbara are numerous with the exception of SB's wonderful oceanside location.

I have also noticed the mash-ups that are sometimes noticed in places where different peiods/styles collide.

Well now Michael Jacobs - I certainly was not expecting where this post took me. Now I am pondering in what ways might I be a serial dater.

Hi Michael,
Your post reminded me of the song I'm a Girl Watcher

I spent a year in the midwest several years ago and was fascinated by the craftsmanship in the architecture. Comparatively speaking, the west is very young.  As the saying goes, "they don't built 'em like they used to."

Carol Williams - one of my favorite cities which is known for architectural treasures is Oak Park in the Chicago area.  The collection of Frank Lloyd Wright homes is magnificent and the tour there is one of my favorite memories of an area I love a lot.

Serial dater - now, that is a new one on me, Michael!

And, I totally 'get' the architectural reference! We have a community with common areas that have a glorious Scottish theme with stone entrance, club house, landscaping accents, etc. The houses? A sea of vinyl and no apparent architectural style at all! It just doesn't go together - even remotely!
