Selma...I Love Living Here!

There, I said it!  May the comfort gods find peace at last...at least for the moment...

My problem? Perfect weather vs. ultimate convenience;

As an example; I picked my brother up from his new little house is Selma to take him to the bank. In those days I was still smoking so he lit up a cigarette in the car and when I pulled up to the bank, he looked at me and asked "Are we here already? I smirked and replied with "Yep!" Then without any warning he coined a phrase for Selma I have used over and over again, He said "Man, this is a two puff town!"

Size is relative, I know, and so is the level of convenience on experiences. I come from Los Angeles and there, convenience was the freeway and the beach. Living in Denver; snow plowed streets early in the day meant convenience. When living in San Francisco, having your own parking space is convenience. Now, convenience to me means walking in to pay a parking ticket with no waiting and 2 minutes back to the house. That's what I'm talking about.

I took these pictures while walking my dog Buddy downtown Selma this last  January and I think it is time to share them. I hope to convey the calm quiet feeling of my town as someplace that sounds really good to meander in, live in, and grow in.

Great pictures, you can practically "feel" the quiet. Very funny but looks like a great place to live. Thanks for sharing your story and pics.

Sheron, fantastic pictures and a very cute puppy, that for me is enough for a great post. But I also love the way you tell us the stories of what "convenience" means in different places in comparison to Selma.

Sheron, makes me wanna move there!  Your town is so small you could effectively use an electric car!

The more I think about it the more I like that idea Terry...which one should I choose?

zap car

After all, our most famous Realtor in Selma has a funny car...

Tuckers car

Thanks Griselda - it just kind of came together...the convenience awareness.

Terrie - first time I have seen that spelling for you name. Selma is peaceful. All the elementary schools converge into one middle school and all the 6th graders know each other there. How kewl is that!

Wayne - I quit smoking a year ago April 4th. Never ever thought I would. I am feeling free for the first time ever!

ZENN 2008

Sheron BFF, I love the look of those Zap cars and woulda picked the green.  However, the dealer also carried the Zenn car, which is the one I bought.  It has a 25mph governor on it, but there is a place that can reprogram it to go 35-40 mph.  So this is the one I bought!  The Zenn is more "car" than the Zap, is much nicer as far as quality, and has more room inside, although it is only two passenger with rear cargo space.  Costs about 7k more though. Still waiting for delivery. Check out their website, zenncars.com

Terry - what a cute car...my recent trip to San Diego was a trip indeed. I saw many unique/small/retro cars everywhere...wondering if they were electrical or just funky. Times, they are a changin'!

Patrice - I am a city girl. Saw my first real pig when I was 26 and have now had 3 horses. I guess if one lives long enough, one gets to experience everything...kind of kewl!

A two puff town. LOL. I hate cigarrettes, but that's funny. Thanks for posting to the Things to Do/Places to Visit group =)

Lisa - I will forever chuckle at the "two puff town" shocker. Jack Benny would wish he had come up with that one!

Sheron - On our multiple trips from Thousand Oaks/Santa Clarita to Sonora each year, we'd pass through your neck of the woods and watch how the area around you kept growing and growing. Thanks for sharing your chuckle so we can chuckle, too.

Thousand Oaks? I have to chuckle about your neck of the woods too. My first career was as a wig designer and I managed a wig salon in Thousand Oaks while living in Reseda. There was absolutely no one there...the year??? Hmmm, it was around 1970, it took me an hour to get there...I desperately needed a babysitter in those days and would do anything to get out of the house ;-0

Sheron - So you traversed the "new" Highway 101, traveling by what used to be Jungleland vs. PF Chang's and the Civic Center? Yes, Thousand Oaks has dramatically changed over the years! They've limited growth to reasonable levels and kept most of the hilltops free of development, but the days of children running together throughout town with front doors left unlocked and everyone looking out for the other's kids are gone, replaced by many levels of status. Typical for many high-cost areas.

True and sad, sad, sad. I hope our children and grandchildren have such fond memories of their childhoods like we do...just can't imagine what it would be.

Sheron - we're doing what we can to make sure our youngest has memories galore to look back on. Takes a bit more effort on our part then it did in the days of Mayberry - or Jungleland. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
