Dog owners unite! If you are like me, you look forward to returning home each day to be greated at the door by a wagging tail and receiving a hero's welcome? There is just something therapeutic about the unconscionable love, loyalty and companionship of our quirky and sweet furry kids.
Seriously, dog people are my kind of people! But, I hate being the bearer of bad news. As home buyers, we may find ourselves in a bit of a jam when it comes to obtaining insurance coverage. This is because dog ownership and homeownership presents added risk to insurance carriers and some dog breeds could make it even harder, if not impossible or extra costly to obtain coverage.
The following breeds are catogorized as dangerous and could even be excluded from homeowners insurance coverage, just something to consider when purchasing a new home, or a new dog.
Here's what know ahead of time. Does your dog make the list?
List of the 14 main dog breeds that most carriers deem as ineligible:
- Pit Bull Terriers
- Staffordshire Terriers
- Rottweilers
- German Shepherds
- Presa Canarios
- Chows Chows
- Doberman Pinschers
- Akitas
- Wolf-hybrids
- Mastiffs
- Cane Corsos
- Great Danes
- Alaskan Malamutes
- Siberian Huskies
Please keep in mind that ANY dog with a bite history is considered ineligible, not just the breeds listed. Also, not all carriers will deem them ineligible, but most will and the ones that will not will charge a surcharge for these specific breeds.
