Design Within Reach

Design Within Reach

You may or may not be familiar with the retailer or its online presence Design Within Reach.  It sells merchandise which may be seen as necessary by some and not-so-necessary by others.

While I have enjoyed the store and appreciate many of the offerings that can be found there, this is not a solicitation for holiday gift-giving for me.

I would rather focus on the gifts that we can present to ourselves(and others too) each and every day.  I enjoy design when it comes to architecture, the planning of cities and objects which I have explored here from time to time.

But today, my attention turns to landscape design.  It can also be explored in many ways.  Obviously, there are examples that are unique.  In flowers and plants.  Trees.  Bushes and shrubs.  The names are often forgotten by me almost as quickly as they are learned.  And then it comes together in a design.

I have observed various gardens over the years.  Gardens  large and quite small.  Carefully imagined as well as those that exist rather randomly.  Almost like a respite from formality.

Such designs can be reassuring.   And then there are times when they startle and surprise.  It's all good.  That is nice and that's within reach.  So many aspects of design are within reach.

I am not familiar with this store and will have to click on your link.

Michael,

Ron and I have owned an Eames chair for years now.  It has traveled  with us, and the ottoman is under my desk, (where Quincy naps,)while the chair is in the bedroom, as well as the Noguchi table which we love...Compared to their prices today, we paid a pittance!  I see they have a store in Oxnard...  A

Hi Michael- as they say "design is in the eye of the beholder"   Some of my favorite landscape designs have been in our friend's yards and their perennial gardens. I loved learning about the different flowers that we don't have here in the south.

Roy Kelley - judging from the photos, your Kentwoods neighborhood in Gaithersburg Maryland certainly offers abundant opportunities to enjoy lexamples of terrific landscaping ideas.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - some of their merchandise is highly collectible and an art investment.

Kathy Streib - I didn't see your comment until now - anyway,  design like beauty is definitely  influenced by the beholder.  Our friends and neighbors are often "showrooms" when it comes to sharing their displays of landscape design.

Endre Barath, Jr. - some think so.  I do like much of the design element associated with DWR but I am NOT an enthusiastic shopper or their target customer.  I'm not in the acquiring "more stuff" mode these days.  That hasn't ever been my "style".

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist - ah, that's so nice of you to say.  Thank you.

Hi Michael Jacobs - I spend a whole lot of time in my garden when the weather is nice which is most of the year.  But even in winter, I look to plant flowers that do well with the colder temps.

The right Charlotte REALTOR!

I could get lost on their site but, like you, Michael, I am not their customer. I would rather travel then wastefully spend $5K+ on a chair! (just MHO)

Talking landscape design - I have SO much ahead of me here. I acquired a very vanilla yard that needs SO much work. I decided that I would do the design so, I just completed one project. The sad part, the areas we landscaped 'felt' like large areas but, when you look at the entire landscape, it is a drop in the bucket! I think I need to sell a few more houses to have it look the way I envisioned it when I bought it. Ha!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - it sounds as if your new back yard is a blank slate.  The  job doesn't need to be a one step, non-stop process and can be accomplished with a solid plan.  You have good vision.

Endre Barath, Jr. - I find trips of imagination to be quite satisfying and much easier on the wallet too.
