anglerfish 
  1. A fish that lures prey with a fleshy lobe attached to a filament that arises from the snout and hangs in front of the mouth. Most anglerfishes have a very large head and wide mouth, with a small body and tail.

I pulled something like that out of the water in Alaska once - many years ago when I was about your grandson's age. I screamed and dropped the pole. Lol. As I recall, my dad said it was an Irish Lord. Regardless, it was scary looking.
