STORY OF A REAL GENUINE HERO
GUNNERY SARGENT JOHN BASILONE
John Basilone (November 4, 1916 – February 19, 1945) was a United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle for Henderson Field in the Guadalcanal Campaign, and the Navy Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was the only enlisted Marine to receive both of these decorations in World War II.
The thing was, he didn’t have to go back to the Pacific. His tour was finished and he was back in the States doing War Bond appearances. He FOUGHT to re-enter the fight! He was turned down several times before he was finally allowed to re-enlist. He insisted he should be back with his men.
John Basilone was killed on Day One of the fight for Iwo Jima.
His story is worth reading as it is long and detailed. A TRUE hero to his last breath. God bless John Basilone.
