Throwback Thursday: A New Kind of Graffiti

plant graffiti in Kauai

We were visiting Kauai in September 2017 and exploring the art town of Hanapepe.

There is a swinging bridge there that's pretty cool to walk over - that's another story. But close by the bridge we noticed quite a bit of graffiti on some of the plants, the leaves of which were apparently quite suitable for amateur artists.

It was sort of a shame to see them defaced, and the first time, other than seeing it on tree trunks, that I have seen plant leaf graffiti.

Good evening Jeff Dowler, CRS ,

It's unfortunate we have become such a "It's all about me" world and must see our name branded on everything.

Hi Kat Palmiotti

We have been to Kauai 4 times now and really enjoy it -  very different from Maui!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel

I think there are ways to leave our marks on the world without defacing nature, public buildings, walls, etc. Not sure that really is necessary, but it's pretty common.

Plant Leaf Graffiti is sad to see on such beautiful plants. Now for that swaying bridge....no thank you.

Good morning Jeff Dowler, CRS - unfortunately I don't think that graffiti adds to the beauty of the plants.

Good morning, Jeff... how interesting... and not something I've ever seen even in Kauai, which certainly is a lush and green island. You really have to wonder sometimes what people are thinking.

Good morning Jeff. I am not a graffeti fan. That said, many viaducts in Chicago have great examples of good work. Enjoy your day!

Good morning Jeff Dowler, CRS  I can remember back in the early 70s when they actually thought places like Chicano Park with the graffiti murals would curb unauthorized graffiti. That plan didn't work so well.  Perhaps people feel they need to prove they are significant.

Jeff I guess this is Kauai's version of what we do to trees here in the US.

Jeff Dowler, CRS - I was raised to always leave the world a better place. My father taught us that when we'd go on family picnics in the park. And as I grew up and ran in races, it was not surprising to have trash bags handed out and everyone spread out to clean up the environment.

To see that type of graffiti on plants is very disturbing to me. I can't even imagine how long it took for it to grow those thick leaves. It does look as if new growth doesn't seem to mind. If so, it confirms that Mother Nature and God above is forgiving.

Nina Hollander It was a first for me in Kauai but I suspect it's around. I guess I don't get the point!
