In Just Six Words...
Last week I read an online article. Then a few days later, I saw something similar on a friend's Facebook page. It seemed appropriate for this time of year as well as for everyday life in general.
Tell us what you are thankful for in six words or less. In this year, like no other, we want to know what makes you grateful.
The story and the FB post caught my attention. Such moments of reflection are useful. Likely necessary as well as we go about the busyness of life.
But then I stopped. Just six words. That's not very many. My mind moved to the importance of brevity in many different aspects. Whether in speech or action, we can cite examples where brevity beats cumbersome, long-winded and verbosity but we can find other times where the opposite is true. I digress.
Since brevity is not a consistent or a close companion of mine, I sought the advice of what others might say so off I went on a search of quotes. Here are some of what I found:
Brevity and conciseness are the parents of correction.
Hosea Ballou
Brevity is the soul of wit.
William Shakespeare
Brevity is
the best recommendation of speech,
whether in a senator or in an orator.
Marcus Tullius Cicero
Hmm, now those are some ponder-worthy thoughts as I attempt to sum up my thoughts in six words or less. Yeah, right. . .
