Ernest August Janson was born in New York City, New York back in 1878.  He served with the U.S. Army for 10 years before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1910.  He served in the Marines until being discharged in 1914.  He re-enlisted in the same year with the Marines serving on the USS Nebraska.

In 1917, he sailed to France aboard the USS DeKalb, serving with the 49th Company, 5th Regiment.  he was wounded at the Battle of Belleau Wood.  In 1918, he returned to the United States where he was admitted to the Naval Hospital, New York for continued treatment of his wounds.  He served out the remainder of his time as a recruiter in New York City.  He died in 1930, he was 51.

What you may not know about Sergeant Major Janson is that he was one of only five people to received two Medal of Honor awards, one from the Army and one from the Navy for actions during WWI.  It is no longer possible for anyone to receive two Medal of Honors.

Good morning James,

I just read more of his history and he was well worthy.

He was also an escort and pal bearer for the Unknown Soldier.

Hopefully, someday we will live in peace and harmony.

Hmm, I didn't realize people could serve for both the army and the navy.  Pretty good of him to receive medals from both.

I love people who understand a sense of duty James Dray . We all have a duty to our clients and thank goodness we usually don't have to take on flying ordinances when we do.

Good morning, James... well the, I suppose Earnest's record of two medals will stand forever never to be challenged. Wonder why they disallowed this.

True courage, valor and American pride. Why can't they add these people to the history books in school to show what true courage is all about.

Regulations now stipulate that soldiers cannot receive two citations for a single action. Perhaps the most notable two-time Medal of Honor recipients are Smedley Butler and Dan Daly, both Marines who began their careers in the late-19th century before serving in World War I

Ernest August Janson dedicated his life in service to his country. He was awarded for his dedication and valor in a way in which no one can any longer be rewarded. That is pretty special.
