Searcy AR girls football 1973 powder puff harry miller team

I Don't Remember This!

Look closely!  There's my daughter in this rag-tag football picture!  When did Searcy have girl's football?  I did a little research (because I do NOT remember it) and discovered that it was started in October 1973 when Harry Miller was in charge of Parks and Recreation in Searcy AR.  Harry was wonderful and was especially instrumental in trying to get sports for girls.  I remember my daughter's playing softball and she loved being on a swim team and she played tennis.....but I do not remember football.   Let's read what Harry said about the teams.  There is a touch of humor in this article.

So, since I don't remember any of this I asked my daughter to tell me what she remembers.  She said,"It was no-tackle but there was still a lot of pushing and shoving.  To 'tackle' someone, you had to get close enough to grab the flag tied to her belt.  I was pretty terrible.  I couldn't run fast and I was afraid of getting knocked down.  I couldn't catch the ball either.  I didn't stick with it and I'll bet Dad was happy to see THAT sport go away."   Dad, by the way, was one of the guys who started Pee Wee Football for boys!

Sadly, Harry Miller was killed in a traffic accident on September 25, 1980.  The whole city of Searcy AR mourned him.

Perhaps I blocked all of this from my memory!  Hopefully some of you can add to this memory.

Barbara, this is very interesting. I was not aware of a Searcy girl's football.

It's great your daughter was on the team and had some memories of it.

I remember watching a tv series where a girl played on a boy's football team.

I think a mixed tag football game has been popular with college students.

There was also a halftime pro football contest where girs threw and kicked footballs.

Don, it was a time when all girl's sports had been eliminated in the schools.  Some of us fought to get sports for girls.  The city agreed and hired a recreation director.  Schools?  Not so.  They took forever with a threatened lawsuit to obey the Title IX law before they started any equality for girls.

I don't believe we've ever had a girls football team in my community.  That's quite the historic photo, Barbara!

Yes, Myrl, it is.  I only saved it because my daughter was in the picture.  Then she must have dropped out of it so it dropped from my memory.
