An Unforgettable Trip To Pearl Harbor

and

Our Arizona Memorial

Pearl Harbor - USS Arizona - Dec 7 - 1941 from Rick & Sheri Sperry on Vimeo.

Let us never forget the horrid attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
As FDR stated, it is "a date which will live in infamy".
Two U.S. Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah) sank along with 188 aircraft which were destroyed. But even more important were the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during this attack.

If you have never had the opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor and go out to the Arizona memorial, put it on your bucket list.  Just be sure you are not attempting to go on a special holiday. On a regular day, it might take well over an hour to take the shuttle to the memorial. But once you are there, it is a very special place and you will be glad that you were able to pay a tribute to those fallen Heroes.

The State of Arizona's Special Memorial At the State Capital

If you get the opportunity to visit the AZ State Capital, make sure you see the memorial in Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza.  There is an anchor, mast, and a gun done in a beautiful tribute to those fallen Heroes. Inside you will find different artifacts including silverware from the ship.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. - You are so right. I feel so blessed to be able to hear about this first hand and continue to share that with my sons.  Soon I will share this with my grandson.

Hi Tammy Lankford,

All my uncles and husband's uncles served in WWII.  Their influence impacted my son and some of my cousins who also served. One of my uncles was a Japanese POW.

Well said Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573.  I am sure a lot of people do not realize that many of those who have survived that day have had their ashes interred in the hull of the ship.

Hi Nina Hollander - It is hard to put into words what comes over you as you stand on top of the platform looking down at the hull of the ship. Watching a bubble or two of oil hit the surface is also amazing to see.

Hi Raymond Henson, SRES, GRI - I have had a similar experience. When our friends passed who were Hawaiian, had a Hawaiian celebration of life with music and graveside celebration. It was uplifting to be a part of it.

Hi Joan Cox - We made a mad dash to see this in a 5-hour layover.  Fortunately, we saw it all in that time frame, still got back to the airport picked up our carry-ons from the rental lockers, and got on the flight ok.  Probably our boldest move ever on a layover!

Hi Lisa Smith - Being part of a family who served in the military has a special effect on us. But others still appreciate all those who served to protect their freedoms.

Hi Kimo Jarrett - You are so right on all points.  It is very efficient.  I still can't believe we were able to accomplish this on a 5-hour layover. To your other point, freedom is not free.

I was stationed in Pearl Harbor 30 years after the attack. They were still finding unexploded bombs and I could see bullet holes in the side of buildings. In was a humbling experiece walking where so many had given up their lives for our country.

Happy Wednesday Sheri Sperry - MCNE®
