Holiday Cactus and Bougainvillea

Holiday Cactus and Bougainvillea

Holiday decorating here in Southern California is noticeably different than what I was used to back in New England.

We spent New Years weekend with a good friend in the California Desert back in 2012, and when walking around the neighborhood we spied this holiday cactus. The plant and ornaments alone were pretty cool but the backdrop of the Bougainvillea made it special.

Seems to me this would be a bit pricklish to decorate, don't you think?

It was a vivid reminder that you will find beautiful holiday decorations wherever you live, or visit, and it's fun to see what people create at their homes, inside or out - whether it's traditional in your mind or not!!

Good morning Jeff Dowler, CRS -  I showed Southern decorations but now that is Southwestern and would expect to find them in Arizona and Nevada too.

Hello Jeff - I think the combination of the cactus and the bougainvillea is a wonderful example of the contrast we can often experience in Southern California.  A nice holiday memory.

Good morning and Merry Christmas Jeff Dowler, CRS I don't have the patience for it, but there were people in Phoenix that used to put decorations on cactus for Christmas every year.

Hi Jeff,
I love Bougainvillea. I know they are a thorny bush but I do think their flowers are beautiful.

Ha ha Brian England  Well I have not tried to decorate a cactus but I have had a few tangles with them and it was not pleasant!

I LOVED the idea Nina Hollander

Hi Wayne Martin  Yes, they ARE beautiful but thorny. And I know others who have had them removed and  it's difficult. Once they are settled they don't want to leave!

Definitely Grant Schneider  It's fun to see what people share from around the country. We are seeing far more decorating this year than in years past, no doubt a reflection of what a challenging year it has been.

I thought it was pretty cool Kathy Streib There are plenty of different plants to decorate if one chooses. We have some white lights on the trunks of the small palsm in front of our house - simple and nice to see!

Late bloomer. Mine Xmas cactus is still not quite ready for blooming. Summer fire ashes block the sun for 1+ months. May be Chinese New Year late bloom.
