Protect Your Peace

Protect your peace.

It is probably one of the most important things you can do, not just this season but throughout the year. You need to protect your peace with your clients, vendors, other agents, and all the other professionals we deal with.

When I say "protect your peace," here's what I'm talking about: If you are communicating with a client, a vendor, or someone on a transaction, and that communication is giving you an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach, then you need to find a way to step back. Your peace is being disrupted. Moving forward at that point will only make things worse. Many times, I recommend people put a little space and time between them and that tension.

That space and time will give you a chance to martial your thoughts, process your emotions, and come back with a little calmer and with more clarity. You also may need to adjust the tone of your communication to get things back on track. For example, if someone sends you an email with a lot of drama dialogue before they get to the point, you need to bypass the drama, get to the facts, and take a moment to send a more positive and professional response.

You might feel like they didn't communicate in the best way, but understand that you don't know what people are up against at any given moment. Be patient with them, and be patient with yourself. A really important part of protecting your piece is giving other people grace.

Another way to protect your peace is to avoid spending time with people who create those levels of stress. It's important to be a professional and do your job, but that doesn't mean you have to be subject to other peoples' drama. To protect your peace, I always recommend you stick to the facts, be the best professional you can be, and don't take things personally.

If someone is calling you and just the thought of answering makes you sick to your stomach, then don't answer it. Let it go to voicemail. Listen to the message and take some time to respond in a calm manner. If calling back makes you feel anxious, then send them an email and start the solution that way.

When protecting your peace, it's really about being aware of what destroys your peace and then not walking into it. Don't go near it. Provide yourself with peace you need. Take the peace back for you in your world.

Finally, it is the Holiday season. There's a lot of emotions circulating out there. People can't spend time with their loved ones. Lots of people are stressed or burned out. Unfortunately, some people don't handle it well. Extend grace and forgiveness to them. Do your best that you can for your clients and the people you work with that may be taking some of their stress out on you.

Take care of yourself, protect your peace, and have a great week.

Love this Denise and you are so right about protecting our peace. I think it's one of the reasons why many don't watch the news channels anymore. We want the facts (the real ones) and not the other stuff that will only upset our peace.

Objectivity often feels in short supply. Especially in this period where our worlds have become smaller due to social distancing. Stepping back where circumstances allow or mental wellness requires it, can help. Thank you for your comment Rocky.

In dealing with my clients, I always keep in mind what a mentor told me early in my career.

The greatest levels of stress are caused by three items.

1. Marriage or divorce

2.Death of a loved one

3. Sale or purchase of  a home

And especially with these challenging covid and political times, where there is a background of negativity pressing on us each day. We have to protect our energy and give grace to those going through such difficult situations.

Good morning Denise.  This is a great lesson we need to learn as soon as we get into the business. Sometimes we feel like we need to work with every client, but I have realized, if I get that pit in my stomach I need to walk away.  We can always refer it out, or just let the person know we are on overload and unable to accept new clients at the moment.  Protecting our peace is so important.  Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this. It is something lots of us need to hear right now with everything going on in the world and the stress of everyone out there.  I try to extend grace as much as possible.  Have a blessed day!

We don't know what other people are dealing with, and they may not be dealing with things professionally. We need to maintain a calm demeanor and sometimes that does mean stepping away.

Enjoy your day!

Grant - It takes strong habits and, gotta say, not remembering to do so a few times, before it becomes easy to do so in the heat of the moment. May we all get there eventually. - Denise

It's always wise to heed those inner voices and if it's not feeling ok or other folks are playing a game, I know to take a step back and let them be.  A solution will fall in to place without force. Or not....

There are times when our bodies know more than what our head knows and it's good policy to pay attention and listen - or step back like you say. Thanks Anna!

Good morning Denise Lones,

I was so glad to see Kathy Streib feature your post in her "Ah-Ha" moments for the week. Protecting our peace is so important in business and our personal life. This is a great lesson to learn as soon as we get into the business. The "word" of 2020 I feel is grace and we need to exhibit this to others.

As we move forward into 2021 and take back up our work and activities, I hope we can all remember that it's not just at the holidays we protect our peace, but that we should be mindful of that in the rest of the year. Wonderful to hear from you Dorie - Denise

There is lots of great advice in your post, for our business but also life in general, especially this year. I particularly liked this statement - "a really important part of protecting your peace is giving people grace."

I had two clients in the past--that made me feel sick in the stomach when I saw them calling me.  Just did not want to deal with their ...demanding, unreasonable attitudes. Fortunately that doesn't happen very often

Like the idea of protecting our peace Denise Lones. It gets exhausting being available to everyone at a moment's notice. Texting is getting especially crazy as everyone expects an immediate answer. Time to breath and find peace no matter what happens during our day.

It is. You're right! It's exhausting. Absolutely exhausting. Many of us thrive on that momentum, but no one can ride that horse forever. And texting? Oh don't get me started. I wrote about that in a blog post a couple months ago too. But yes, take a breath and find your moment every day. - Denise
