George Jennings was born in Eling, Hampshire, England back in 1810 to Jonas and Mary. Educated at a local school ran by his uncle-in-law. His father died when he was 14, so he apprenticed to his grandfather’s glass and lead merchandising business. He later started working for an uncle as a plumber.
In 1831, he worked as a plumber with Messrs, in London. He started his own plumbing business in 1838 specializing in just one thing. (More on that in a moment). In 1847, Prince Albert presented George with the Medal of the Society of Arts. In 1851, he installed his invention at The Great Exhibition at Hyde Park, he charged the visitors one penny to use them. In 1852, he patented his invention. In 1855, at the request of Florence Nightingale he installed his invention at the Sellmiye Barracks hospital at Scutari. He died in 1882, he was 72.
What you may not know about George is that he invented the first public flush toilets. Most of you thought Thomas Crapper did, but when George patented his invention Thomas was only 14.
