When I was going through my divorce in 1994, I ended up with a huge amount of extra time on my hands. Now I did use a lot of that to work on my “stuff” I needed to clean up between my ears, and I still had more time. A buddy of mine had printed song sheets for some songs I knew from the 70s and 80s. So I spent hours practicing them.
Now at the same time, another friend of mine asked me to sing backup on his new CD he was recording in a studio in North San Diego county. As I went to the recording sessions, I found what he wanted is for me to hold a note perfectly and make it sound smooth as glass. I find out the hard way, that is not my forte. My friend was kind and still had me sing on the entire CD as part of his backup singers. But this motivated me.
I took that weakness and started practicing my songs in a whole new way. I wanted to try “tricks” to distract the listener from realizing that I wasn’t holding a clean pure note. I started working with vibrato, pitch bends, glissandos and deglissandos. I used every trick in the book to make my voice do unusual things. The more I worked at those “tricks” the better I got at them. After a while people wanted to hear me sing because they loved those “tricks”. They couldn’t care less if I couldn’t hold a clean pure note.
This is why I believe that we all need accountability partners and mentors. Someone that will (in a kind manner) point out our weaknesses as well as our strengths. Maybe another agent we can roleplay with. Perhaps a coach we pay to improve our performance.
