Joshua 24:15
“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
God delivered the Israelites out of the hands of their enemies in many ways during Joshua’s time. Many times Joshua had to warn them about the hardships they would have if they did not obey the Lord. In this verse he was again presenting them with the choice of what god they would follow. After this verse he asked again and again and the people said they did plan to serve the God that we know and are still talking about today. Gods people experienced the good God promised as they continued to obey Him.
However the next generation that came after Joshua died did not know what the Lord did for them and started following other gods and when that generation went to battle their enemies they lost. They forgot the Lord and went their own way and defeat started to overtake them.
What does this have to do with your life and current times? For one it points to the choice we have to follow God and serve in the way(s) we are called to serve. We also can choose many of the distractions of the world. It also shows how obedience compared to disobedience can affect our outcomes in our life. God’s grace is new every day, and every day we have choices that are obedient to our calling and also choices that could pull us away from our calling. Do your best to stay alert and choose the path that leads to the goodness and promises of God shining though!
