Meat Me In St Louis

Over the years, I am sure all of us have heard/seen words or terms misinterpreted in some rather unusual ways. In a comment on one of my posts last week, Sharon Lee mentioned a funny memory of her Mom’s pronunciation of the name Phoebe.   Her memory “fit”  with this-at-the-time unfinished post - so, here it goes. . .

It's certainly common in real estate where specific terminology and acronyms might be tossed about quite

easily that someone not familiar might become confused.  And they might not even question it.  It may simply go over their head or they may ignore it.

Industry-specific lingo can do that but so can everyday language.  Recently, a friend of mine told me that for the longest time, he thought rib eye steak was actually Rabbi Steak.  Hmm, he never questioned it.  He wasn't sure how he learned the correct version. . .but we had a good laugh.

Be careful "out there" you never know what you may be serving with your words.   And this conversation extends far beyond the kitchen.

Roy Kelley - a word to the wise.  To the unwise as well.

Sharon Tara - yes, mondegreen.  Another activity I have practiced over the years.  I mentioned it to Debe Maxwell, CRS on that recent post too.

Michael,

Love the Rabbi steak.  It reminded me of thinking that the word "Sephardic" was safari!  So when Ron's mom asked me which dress to wear to a Shephardic wedding, I said it should reflect an African theme...A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - is it considered rude to wear "khaki" to such an event?  Is it meant only for members of the "bridle" party ----  sorry, just horsing around.  Nothing like a little jungle humor mixed with an equal dose of equine.  Oops, too evil???

Hi Michael,
Whatever you call it, that steak looks really good!

I have a few pet peeves about how certain words are pronounced and REALTOR® is one of them.  I cringe when I hear Reel-a-tur... and it's oh so common... even among otherwise intelligent people.

Another pet peeve is the term Safe Deposit box.  It's NOT a Safety Deposit box. We deposit valuables in a box in a Safe. It is a Safe Deposit box.

Happy Saturday, Michael!

Hi Michael Jacobs - As you mentioned, in our industry, we do have to be careful especially with clients to explain the acronyms and what they mean.  My husband came from UPS... and talk about words and what they mean, yikes! He had to explain everything to me.  Two examples... they call the delivery vans "package cars" and tractor-trailors are "feeders".

btw I used to love rib eye steak "well done" and my husband always said: "really? that's like eating shoes" LOL

I'll join you for some Rabbi steak and enjoy some laughter together at one another's mis-servings! Or, is that Miss Servings? Or Mrs. Servings? Missed servings, perhaps, Michael?!

Happy Sunday!

Hahaha. I am with Joan, I've heard agents say Quick Claim far too often. :)  Good post to make your point. Ah, wonderful language.

Carol Williams - there are lots of "hot button" issues.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE®  - I guess every industry does have a lingo.

Abby Stiller  - I have heard that shoe reference before.  Do you enjoy your steak that way?  Go ahead and enjoy.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - like Joan Cox, I have also heard the term quick claim - every day in real estate is an "adventure".  Away from it too.

Michael, I usually have steak on Friday nights, but BOY, that sure looks good!   Going to a friend's house tonight, think they are having taco salad.   Not nearly the same!

Absolutely, a wonderful rib-eye on the grill, a couple anaheim chiles and a glass of very good red wine.  Tonight is baked chicken, what are you having?  Do you cook, do you like to cook?

Joan Cox - sorry for the delay in responding.  I don't always recall what I had to eat yesterday let alone more than a week ago in many cases.  My culinary skills are quite limited and even more so these days.
