Every year it was the same in elementary school. Our little minds were increasingly distracted by what Santa may bring us and so we were more and more distracted from actual learning starting around December 10th or so. So, in the last week of school, teacher would have us do a Christmas craft project and it would be completed with the last day of school prior to Christmas break. We would have a Christmas party in class (full of sugary delights), play Christmas songs and finish our craft project. At the end of the day, we would race home with our treasures looking forward to showing mom what we made her so that she could tell us what a great job we did. Then came the in between days.
The in between days were the ones where we were out of school, but Christmas hadn’t come yet and so we couldn’t play with our new toys yet. But I remember the end of the in between days. The end was always the party at the Maxwell’s house. There were about 8 families that would gather there every Christmas Eve. Around like 9pm. The kids were off in one room the adults were in the living room. The adults had wine, beer, or egg nog spiked with brandy or bourbon. The kids got egg nog without the spike or maybe just fruit punch. The kids would talk about what Santa would bring them tomorrow. Perhaps the adults would do the same.
I do remember one year, I overheard the adults talking about a toy I REALLY wanted that year – a Hot Wheels racing trach with Supercharger. But one adult told my mom she should make sure I never got one, because the Supercharger had rotating wheels that the car shot through and if kids stick their fingers in it, they could get hurt. I remember hearing my mom agree with that adult. My heart sank. Mom and dad weren’t getting me a Hot Wheels Supercharger racing track.
As with each year, we left the party a little after midnight and went home. Being so late, within 5 minutes I was so sound asleep a bomb wouldn’t be able to wake me. I slept all the way until 7am. Then I went straight to my parents bedroom, woke them up and we all went to the living room together. To my amazement, I saw all that Santa had left me after I was asleep. Including a Hot Wheels Supercharger racing track. All was right with the world. Thank God for Santa!
