Chung Ju-yung was born in Kangwon Province, North Korea back in 1915 into a large impoverished family of peasants. He wanted to be a teacher but due to the restrictive environment at the time, the family was kept in poverty, effectively keeping him away from higher education.
At a young age is was apparent he had a great business mind. He tried running away three times, but was caught. His fourth time he ended up in Seoul, where he found a job at Incheon Harbor. He then found a job as a deliveryman at the Bokheung Rice Store in Seoul. With only six months on the job he impressed his boss so much that he was put in charge of the store’s accounting.
In 1940, he decided to get into the automobile repair business. In just three years he had 70 employees. In 1946, he decided to build his own brand of automobiles, thus he named his new vehicles Hyundai. Now you know how Hyundai started. When he died in 2001 at the age of 85, he was the wealthiest man in Korea.
