Raymond Lewis Johnson was born in Alice, Texas in 1943. He attended school in a small schoolhouse with four different grades in each of its two rooms. He earned a National Merit Scholarship attending the University of Texas at Austin. After completing his undergraduate studies, he went to Rice University.
After graduation, he obtained a position at the University of Maryland, College Park as. Mathematics professor. He served as a mentor to 23 doctoral students. he remained at Maryland for 40 years. In 2015, he won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. He is currently professor emeritus at the University of Maryland, College Park and an adjunct professor of mathematics at Rice University.
What you may not know about Raymond is that he was the first African-American student at Rice University and the first African-American mathematics professor at the University of Maryland.
