We hear it all the time.  It is just stuff, clutter really, but as I contemplate putting all of the Christmas decorations away, I do wonder.  Is this really true?  It seems every decoration holds a special memory.  There is the Santa I remember painting as a kid and all of the wood Christmas candy canes my step dad cut out for us and my mom painted.  I bet we used to have 20 of them.  We used to line our whole yard with them.  We are down to two.  They are starting to fall apart and they really should go.  They will not!

There is the old mixed in with the new tucked into the tree.

There is the year we made the rule, gifts can only be homemade.  That really was a fun year! (The three ornaments at top left were not homemade)

                 Family Made Decorations

And then there are my favorites.  They date back to our first Christmas.  We did not have much, but Mary Margaret made Christmas magical, as always.  They were part of Matthew's first Christmas and then, Joseph's first Christmas.   Now, they are the center piece of our Snowman collection that greets our grandsons.  30 years these cheap Christmas balls have been a part of our traditions.

                 Our Snowman Collection

One day, Joseph and Matthew will find these in the attic, look at each other and say, "Why did they save these old styrofoam balls covered in cheap Christmas fabric and just look at those old bows!"  It might be all clutter to them and that would be fine.  We all need to create our own traditions, but to us, they are priceless.  I am sure my boys will find something in the attic that they hold special even if these end up in the dumpster, something I have seen happen time and time again with my client's homes. Then again, maybe they will look at these humble, little decorations and say, "Mom always sparked Christmas magic, let's each take half."  I am thinking that day is a long way off, but one thing is for sure, our boys will have a difficult task. There is so much stuff!

Merry Christmas and many blessings for the New Year to you and your family.

You touch on a very important point, the memories that are brought back each and every year with the decorations is very important.

It is remarkable all the memories that flash back each year, Brian England.  It looks like I need to find some AZ decorations to start some new Christmas traditions.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400, I agree with you 100%.  We need a bigger house, though.  We can't get all the memories out!  Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Each time I help a family get their home ready to sell and we have a household of things to clean up, I wonder what the late homeowner valued and what memories went with all the things, Endre Barath, Jr..  To me, it is a sad day when the dumpster shows up.

It is a shame when the special stories are not recorded.

Hi Raymond Henson, SRES, GRI - we cherish our old traditions as we make new ones.  Just gave me another idea for a blog.

I agree, Grant Schneider.  Sometimes those traditions are not apparent until you look back.  My wife made me save some ceiling fans that I removed from a rental this year.  More junk, I thought.  She painted one just before Christmas of a snowman juggling snowballs.  It is so cute and is a perfect addition to our traditions.

I look forward to your blog with the new idea.

It depends on the year, but this year we will put things away after the 2nd.  The real work is the decorating.  It takes us about three days to get everything in place, but it is fun and Russell just loved it.  Happy New Year to you Joan Cox.  I hope the New Year is a special one for you!

Hi Raymond- thanks to Grant Schneider for mentioning this post in his!!!  Those ornaments and decorations are not clutter but memories to be shared.   I love the idea that you made handmade gifts this year. One year my cousins and I did something similar although the gifts had to be consumable. (we like to eat)

Grant Schneider, thank you for all you post.  I know you inspire many, including me.

Hi Kathy Streib, I definitely like the consumable gifts too. I was not a big fan of the only homemade rule the year we did it, but after the fact, it seems as though we all enjoy those presents the most.

Raymond Henson, SRES, GRI - It doesn't look like clutter to me! I wish I had Christmas with decorations, a Christmas Tree, and a Christmas meal. It has been a long, long time since I did.

I see happiness, love, and celebration in your photographs.
