Motivational Monday - Trendy or Classic?

 

As long as I have been in this business, we have been told that it is a necessity to flow with the trends. We must stay a step ahead and follow everything trendy - from social media to AI, you’re not a presence if you aren’t trendy.

 

Or are you?

 

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS CRB, Phoenix Broker and Carol Williams sponsored a challenge in October (Rising above the Pandemic) and @Margaret Rome’s April challenge (Finding Ways to Help During a Pandemic) got us all thinking outside the box. There were so many ideas, some that are trendy, some that were new ideas that worked and others that were simply classic, ‘back-to-basics’ ideas. I feel like we all read them with a passionate curiosity - none of us really knew the right answer. Was there even a 'right' answer?
 

We are in a pandemic and I get that we have to think outside the box to establish the direction of our businesses during these trying times. Does what we incorporate in our business really have to be trendy though?

Trendy or Classic

 

I never lost phone service during 2020! Hmm…picking up the phone and spreading thoughtful, positive cheer, answering questions, offering help to those most in-need or just to say “Hello” should continue to work. Why not try that? 

 

While I had to have something to keep me busy during the first weeks of being deemed ‘non-essential’ (according to Charlotte’s mayor), I still kept up my phone calling to my sphere. To my surprise, what I found was that many of my sphere were following my silly little ‘Coronavirus Hacks’ Facebook posts. I was more often than not, greeted by phone with, “Oh, I’m loving your hacks - we had our garage door serviced,” etc. 

 

Even more of a surprise was that many of the people who commented about those posts during our phone conversations, did not comment on them online - they were reading them ‘in stealth mode,’ as I call it! I would never have known that, had I not continued my calls. 

 

The bottom line is that good old, person-to-person communication, something that is not very trendy, actually works better than the trendy, shiny things that are constantly being ‘sold’ to us! Naturally being old school but, having millennials who keep me ‘trendy curious,’ I’ve enjoyed blending the two. However, truth be told, my preference is classic - it’s just what is in my core!

 

How do you run your business - trendy or classic?

I do the trendy more with marketing than anything. Customer service - well, it's white glove all the way and if someone wants me to text with them instead of call, I'm happy to oblige!

LOL I think texting is a little more impersonal but, my younger clients prefer that over a phone call. I'm still all about hearing the live voice but, we do what our clients want, right?!

Fluff is a great way to put it and yes, we are easy prey to scammers, sadly. I haven't figured out if it's because as a group, we are so anxious to gain success or if there are just more of us in the world to fall for their gimmicks?!

You're so right - it really does't ever go out of style, Brenda Mayette! You can tell agents this over and over again and many of them can't ever seem to wrap their heads around the basics!

I agree, Kat Palmiotti! I hate voice mail - leave me a vm and then I have to listen to it and likely miss you on the call-back. Answering the phone has worked for me since 2004 and I think I'll stick to that! LOL

This year has been so different, Scott Seaton Jr. Bourbonnais Kankakee IL Home Inspector and as Kat Palmiotti mentioned, more people are answering their phones. I believe more people are lonlier this year too. I try to direct the conversation to positivity but, mostly the conversation is me listening though. Having someone listen to them is just what the doctor ordered!

Same here, Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD! I mostly use 'trendy' for marketing and advertising but, human contact is by far, my favorite part of this business!

You defined trendy & classic the same way I would, Jeff. I believe we have to be 'trendy' to some degree with our marketing - it's what the masses expect from us - but, as for customer service, like you, I'm good with classic!

Thank you so much, Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR! I think the caring part is very difficult to convey when we are using trendy techniques in our business. A phone call or face-to-face is far easier to convey that level of service that we do provide than anything we could do that is 'trendy.'

I'm having a blast with the Tuesday calls, Dorie. I feel like we all walk away with at least one nugget that we can apply to our businesses after each call. It's an hour that we can relax among friends and learn!
