One of our family's favorite holiday traditions is watching that Christmas classic, "It's A Wonderful Life" with Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart.
In past years we've watched it in person as a family on Christmas Eve at the classic Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto, complete with popcorn and soda. In that venue, booing the villian (Potter) and cheering on the hero (George Bailey) is encouraged, much as it was in old melodramas.
For years, the tradition was to watch it on Christmas Eve. However, this year we watched it as a family at my house on Christmas Day. I was grateful to continue the tradition with my loved ones at all, even though it was different for 2020.
I can relate to the struggle of George Bailey-someone who wants to accomplish great things elsewhere, yet keeps on riding the roller coaster of the economic ups and downs of small family business. (There are many similar challenges between the Building & Loan and Real Estate business.)
Yet even when facing "bankruptcy, scandal and prison" through no fault of his own, George Bailey comes to realize this truth: "No man is a failure who has friends."
This year we lent our DVD of the movie it to several different groups of friends who'd never watched it before. If you haven't yet seen "It's A Wonderful Life", I highly recommend it.
