Home Inspection Abroad

By
Home Inspector with International Property Inspection

As the recently-appointed president of the International Association of Certified Home Insepctors (InterNACHI) I'm tasked with developing inspection outside US borders.

We've been considering Latin America as a starting point for our efforts. In places like Mexico, buyers from the US, Canada, Japan, UK, Italy, Germany and France are spending lots of money on high end homes in resort cities like Puerto Vallarta, Playa Del Carmen, Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan. There are no building codes in Mexico. There are no home inspectors in Mexico. What you see is what you get, and you also get what you don't see or aren't trained to recognize.

There is resistance from realtors in Mexico who don't want deals blown by inspectors. There is the question of how to deal with graft, insurance laws and Mexican laws dealing with foreigners working in Mexico.

It's my feeling that in the long run, developing an inspection industry in Latin America will help build confidence in those considering investing in homes there.

I'd like to hear from realtors with experience or interest in home inspection outside US borders and especially in Latin America
