The tail doesn't wag the dog
What I really find interesting in this story is that the agent that seemingly doesn't need any help made time to be with a coach. Maybe that is why he was a Superstar. I do agree with Rocky Dickerson, a good agent does need to steer his own car. Oh, and I would gladly sit down with him once a week.
Once when I was coaching real estate agents for a broker, I was talking to an agent that didn't want to talk business. She didn't want to find empowering strategies. She didn't want to see how we can help her. All she wanted to do is play the victim card.
You see, I was helping all the agents in my office with a weekly coaching session. In the session, together we look at the last 7 days, any challenges they are having, and what the plan for the next seven days. I've been doing this type of coaching for various industries for over 20 years. The meeting takes about 15 minutes.
Now some agents would just easily set their weekly appointment. Including the superstar pro I had that was doing a ton of transactions. Some would make it a little difficult but it's accomplished. Some would even make me do very early or very late times or do the coaching on the phone. I am okay with all of that. I want to be a part of what builds them up - not what tears them down so I would work to accommodate them within my schedule. But I did expect it to be scheduled. After all, if we are to be paid like a professional, we should run our business like a professional, right?
This brings me back to my agent. Here I was with decades of business and real estate experience offering to help her discover ways to help her make her life easier. Her response? "How will I ever know if I have a lead that has to meet at that exact time? They may call me with just minutes notice -I can't run my business that way. I can't ever set appointments in advance." SHe was simply allowing the tail to wag the dog. That doesn't work well. Basically it's as if she had the steering wheel to their car removed and she was saying to people, "Here - take the wheel." Meanwhile the car is careening down the freeway with no way to steer it.
I don't know about you, but I expect my doctor, my attorney, my accountant can't just drop everything to see me. I expect that because they are professionals I will have to adapt to their professional needs. Perhaps if we grabbed our own wheel, steered our own professional business, we may be respected more like professionals instead of snake oil salesmen. And then on that rare occasion where you do have to reschedule your appointment with your office manager, they will understand.
I don’t know what ever happened to that agent. I suspect she dropped out of the business before too long. Perhaps maybe one day she realized (in whatever she does now) how to steer her own car.
