There is An Etiquette To A Re-blog And Not Just The Points

I have seen many members here on ActiveRain post frequently as a re-blog and often on the blog roll it would be within minutes or hours of the original post being submitted.

While it is a compliment to the original author that their work should garner that attention, there was once an etiquette about why a re-blog and usually when to re-blog. I seem to recall that back in the day we may even have had mention of it at a time when there were events called RainCamps, but that will be a post in the not to distant future.

There is An Etiquette To A Re-blog And Not Just The Points

Why Would a person re-blog?

Typically there is something within the post that speaks directly to a thought we may have. Instead of writing a new post where one may give credit to the original author, or maybe even offer an opposing view to the author, it would be common to do a re-blog of the post and offer at the very least a brief (50-100) word explanation as to the reason for the re-blog.

What Happens With A Re-blog

The ActiveRain platform offers real estate professionals around the country to interact with each other toward a common goal of getting a wider spread to our business and hopefully get rewarded for that in the form of business and not just the points.  Comments to a post get the attention of the spider-bots that look for content so the nature of the comment attached to the original post, especially if a key word within the post is mentioned. It's called blog and ping in it;s simplest form.

The blog gets posted and if one waits a short time, do a google search for the post and it should be very close to the top of the first search page.

And example of this can be found by reading the following post by AR teaching legend Barbara Todaro :

The Power Of Re-blogging....It Has The Energy Of Lightening!!

It was a re-blog of a post written by another AR legend and when both had had time on the web their posts were at the top of the search pages.

What is The etiquette of a re-blog?

While nothing is written in stone, it was normally presumed to wait for the original post to run it's course, which was usually a couple of days.  That allowed the original author to get their just exposure before someone else looked to post their thoughts. Also, a few words to justify the re-blog in your own thoughts and  reminder to any who do read your re-blog to go back to the original author and give them a few points of appreciation as well.

More on the etiquette of a re-blog can be found in this very detailed post by Brenda Mullen :

Give Those Re-blogs a Kick-Getting the Most Out of a Re-blog

A re-blog can give valuable exposure to both the original author as well as the person doing the re-blog. That exposure is important to what the purpose of the blog platform was intended to offer which was business. We all do appreciate the opportunity to get additional business and when blogging is done properly it can be effective.

Lise Howe   I have seen the re-blog come up minutes after the original post and there are a few here that are serial re-bloggers.  Accomplishes nothing.

Brian England   I have noticed that and hopefully you are waiting 3-4 days after the initial post to give it it's own time and encouraging any who might read your post to go back and give recognition to the original author.

Nina Hollander   Serial re-bloggers that just steal the post from the original author

Ed Silva I do not wait 3-4 days partly because I wouldn't remember which posts I would want to reblog after that amount of time has passed and partly because I had heard that the more google juice all at once there is the higher such a thing would rank.  SEO is constantly changing though and I do not keep up.

Lottie Kendall   I did a search for re-blogging on the site and the last posts were in 2013 and the better ones I included in this post.

Beth Atalay   That is the intent coupled with comments  to why the re-blog was done.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400   There are times when I do re-blog, although not very often and it would have to be a topic with which I agree and didn't think I could do as good a job as the original author

Hi Ed:

Thanks for sharing this. I don't do alot of reblogging but it was a helpful reminder about why it's a good idea, and when it is best to do so. I suspect most appreciate the additional recognition they might get. I like to share information about why I decided to reblog a particular post and appreciate when others do as well.

Sage advice, Ed and I totally understand your rationale. I believe Roy Kelley taught me that many moons ago and I hadn't really thought of it. I don't reblog often but, will definitely keep this in mind.

Thanks!

Jeff Dowler, CRS   I too don't re-blog much but the manner in which I see it done now benefits no one.

Debe Maxwell, CRS   Than you,  When done right it can get the authors some additional web recognition.

Lynn B. Friedman  Well then thanks and get to it  :))

I do not do a lot of re-blogging.  However, I might write a counter-blog or a blog in the same neck of the woods as the blog I read.  There are those who take tremendous advantage of reblogging to the point it appears to be stealing in my opinion.   Have a great day...

I don't re-blog often, but usually if I do it is because I think it is a post which applies outside of any specific area or locale and will help prospective clients of mine to understand something to do with the real estate transaction.

Love this post and definitely worthy of a feature.  Re-blogging is a compliment to the writer and gives the re-blogger the opportunity to expand, add and give kudos.  Good for you for recognizing that!

Hello Ed - while a re-blog was once a part of my history on occasion, that type of activity is even rarer recently.  Your well-deserved feature post highlights the proper way to participate in this ActiveRain task for those new to the platform as well as blogging veterans.
