Reading this post by Bliz reminded me of the big box brokerage I was with for 18 yrs.

They did everything to promote the company brand. They advertised your open house at no charge and gave you license plate holders with the company logo.

The brokers led us to believe it was the company brand that people were seeking. 

Here was my listing presentation way back then; it consisted of these three questions 

-Are you 100% you want to sell

-Are you 100% you want to use me

-Do you have any questions about my company 

 

Affirmative answers on all three were my criteria for getting a listing agreement signed. 

Today there are only two questions since it is my company. 

Being with a large name brokerage gives you brand recognition, but it also ties you in with all the other agents' adverse outcomes. 

Remember

The Real Estate company is only as good as your listing agent. 

The best school is only as good as your child’s teacher. 

The famous hospital is only as good as the doctor treating you. 

 

It is YOU that makes the brand outstanding.

  If your friend had a bad medical experience, the hospital’s reputation suffers. 

If your son/daughter has a negative teacher, you blame the school. 

Same in RE. When I left the big box company, I was told how much I “needed” their brand. 

That was eleven years ago when HomeRome Realty started.

What I needed was my brand. It was me, not the company that people wanted.

Like you, my first 10 years as a Realtor (back in the 1980s), was with a big box real estate company.  I will say they gave me a great foundation when beginning my career.  It came through their advertising program, and education.  But, I must also say that it was the kind-heartedness of several really experienced agents within that company who freely took me under their wing to help me on my way.  

You are absolutely right in saying, "Your brand is you."

Well said Margaret. I foresee continued growth in consumer appreciation of the value of 100% independence and undivided loyalty that flows from single agency representation in real estate.

Your big box brokerage brands and their minions obfuscate the downside of dual agency.

Too many weak salespeople (yes, real estate is SALES) want to trade alot of their money to a company hoping 'th brand/the company' will somehow relieve some of their lack of sales skill

Dear Margaret,

You certainly make this statement true. I never care which brand someone is with, so long as they are fair and square and professional. In the end, we all want the sellers to sell & the buyers to buy and for the transaction to be as smooth as possible under the circumstances.

Being associated with a big box brand is truly a double edge sword.  We've been both sought out and rejected because of the association.  Your comparison to how reputations are formed is spot on.

Being 100% Independent pulls you out of the group and makes you stand out on the SERP results. I agree 100% the Brokers are their Brand. I always told Realtors to advertise themselves as their Brand and try to rank in Google for their name as an entry-level 101 introduction to SEO. After you are indexed by your name for the Full First Page of Google then move on to a local search term. Get all your customer reviews and keep building your brand as a local Independent Real Estate broker.
