3 Reasons Why You Should Take Your Kid Fishing

By
Industry Observer with Stylerail

There are a lot of father-son activities, or mother-daughter activities, that parents and families choose to do as a way to bond with their children and build that relationship. Activities such as soccer, basketball, camping, and learning how to ride a bike, are all traditional activities, filled with fun and exercise. But one family fun and bond-building activity that has been around for the longest time is fishing, and more specifically, offshore fishing. There is nothing more your kid will love more than being on a boat and trying to catch some fish! As a parent, you ought to want your kid to learn an important life skill like fishing. Here are 3 reasons why you should take your kid fishing.

#3- Teach Them to Be Providers

You often find many family generations pursue the practice of a father taking their children fishing. It’s as if it’s every family’s tradition and cultural norm. A reason why that’s the case is because of the many skills and life-lessons that fishing teaches a young child. Most notably of which is that it teaches them to be providers. Hunting your gathering your own food was -long ago- a necessity for survival. Today it’s a luxury. Yet it wouldn’t hurt to have such a skill set in your arsenal. Being able to fish and provide for yourself might be an outdated trait, but it’s a good one to have nonetheless.

#2- It’s An Adventure

The big blue sea, the rocking boat, the barely visible fish underneath, all those may seem mundane to the eyes of an adult. But to a child, it’s an adventure the likes of which they read about in fairy tales, and see in movies. You’ll allow them to marvel at the many different types of fish they come across. They’ll experience the sea for the first time, spend the day on a boat like a pirate! You don’t have to do much, just let them go out to the sea or ocean, and let their imaginations do the work for you. Taking your son or daughter out to sea and have Fun Fishing together is -in and of itself- an adventure and will help your children to grow up in a warm family atmosphere. Then, teaching them how to fish, will be the added cherry on top!

#1- Teach Them Crucial Characteristics

Fishing teaches you a lot of things, many of which would be incredibly useful to learn at a young age. One thing fishing teaches you is patience. Waiting patiently for your line to grab a catch is no easy thing, especially for a kid who will bore easily, and begin to act up. Another thing fishing teaches you is to always be prepared. You don’t want to be stuck in the middle of the ocean having forgotten your sunscreen and your fishing rod. A third thing fishing teaches you is how to work together and bond, to achieve a common goal. Fishing isn’t a one-person job. There’s a reason why every captain has a first mate. Teach your child to work in tandem with other people to grab that big catch.

Hi Rana- I love to fish and totally agree with the reasons you listed for taking your child fishing. It's not about catching a fish but more about the act of fishing.

Excellent points. I can just imagine the excitement in a child's voice and they declare they went fishing with dad (or mom, or grandpa!)

Good afternoon Rana Tarakji ,

I love this post! So glad that Kathy Streib featured your post in her "Ah-ha" moments for the week. I so agree with you. My son loved to fish off the dock, he now has introduced his 2 children to the art of fishing. Such great times together and patience is definitely a life skill you learn!

I would add #4 to your list.  Memories.  I have great memories of fishing with my father and now taking my kids fishing.  Someday, my grandkids too.

Love this post!  I grew up fishing in Kansas, Missouri and Wyoming with my parents.  There were times I didn't like it as a teenager, but the solitude spoke volumes to me as a middle kid of 6.  Great topic!
