Tuesday’s Thoughts - "Normal Led to This" (A Recession and Now, a Pandemic)
How many times did we hear during The Great Recession, “I can’t WAIT for our market to return to normal?” At least once a week, right? I mean, it was a disaster for any and everyone in the real estate business. Our world was upside down!
I somehow managed - with two in college at the same time to motivate me - to build my business to a level I never thought possible. Why? I began doing something abnormal for me - short sales. They were exhausting, time-consuming, some were heart-wrenching and others, just plain maddening! I carried 30 listings during any given month. Oh, how I yearned for normalcy!
Mid-2012 brought about a noticeable change in the real estate market. Inventory was being absorbed and sellers were finally happy! Buyers were even happy - we were in more of a neutral market than most had ever seen.
Fast-forward to 2020 and our crazy, busy, booming market turned to one with a painfully low inventory. An active listing rarely lasts 3 days. That has continued into 2021 and almost every buyer I have, finds themselves in a bidding war. It’s INSANE! While I don’t want another 2008, I’d be thrilled with a 2012 market - as normal as my market has been since 2004!
Another ‘normal’ to ponder…
How many times this year have you heard people say they want to do away with mask-wearing and social distancing and return to fine dining, social events, hugging - in a single word, normal? I know I’ve said that!
Have you thought that ‘normal’ is what led to this? Normal got us here. Normal failed us. How do we use this failure and the knowledge we have gained to avoid ever returning to the situation we are in? How do we ‘build something better?’
Does normal always morph into something disastrous? Do we take normal for granted?
Rocky Dickerson will relate to this…
I remember my favorite psychology professor said, “If someone tells you they are normal, RUN!” It’s like someone telling you, “I’m a good person.” A good person never has to say that.
Perhaps we should use another word. Normal just doesn’t seem to be doing it for us!
