Once upon a time, I went through a number of workshops, worked on my “stuff” and got better. Knowing the process that I had been through, I KNEW that I was healed and would be perfect for the rest of my life. I see a couple where they speak a lot about how they have nothing to improve. I get it. I was once there.
Over 10 years ago a friend asked me to come to a Celebrate Recovery meeting and celebrate her 90-day chip with her. I went and it was fun. I attended for 5 years off and on. I would look around and say to myself, “Thank goodness I don’t have problems like THEY do.” Then after 5 years of going through this, God finally caught my attention one night. Like a 2 by 4 at full speed between the eyes. It hit me. All my new age mantras I repeated, all the ways I would imply that I was perfect. They all meant nothing. I found the river.
What is the river? Denial. Denial isn’t just a way to say “the Nile”. Denial is the way we nonconfront our imperfections. The people that say that they have nothing left to improve on themselves? The people that say they have no fears? The people that say they have no issues? Well, their first issue is denial.
Since then, I have worked on a number of issues and always found another one to add to the list. Improving and growing from facing our imperfections is a part of what brings out the best in ourselves. Whether it is business or personal, we are always meant to hone and refine. We are always meant to work on our imperfections. And when we have none left to work on? Then we need to work on our denial.
