It seems too early for rose bushes to start budding but it is amazing what warm weather can do for plants. We might get snow here tomorrow and Tuesday but definitely rain and only high of 43*.

I love the Japanese language for this reason. What a wonderful word. It fits perfectly. I'm a big fan of plants and trees reflecting on nearby surfaces. Even in our Great Room, I love to see the shadow designs that appear on walls. Temporary art.

Kat Palmiotti Oh, I so love the mountains, both in Spring and in Summer. It is why I like skiing when there are no crowds, the quiet shushing of the skis, and the views. In the summer it is as good! Definitely, a Shibumi moment after moment. A

Nina,
When we bought our home in Los Angeles, I had the landscaper plant birch trees in the front. It is the Russian spirit. You no doubt know that the Russians planted them down as a contrast to the dark trunks in the forest. The birches lightened the way with their white trunks...A
I've never heard that term, "shibumi" before, Alexandra. I need to add it to my lexicon. When I think of it, I immediately think of a cave. The first of mankind used them as their natural shelter!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - I enjoyed reading your post today. It reminds me of all the places I went whenever I visited my daughter when she lived for four years in Seto, Aichi in Japan. There's a lot to learn and the culture is so fascinating and/or respectful! People who live in Japan take pride in their country.

Michael Jacobs I love the concept of shibui, it goes right along with shibumi, they are related, Shibui, shibumi, or shibusa are Japanese words which refer to a particular aesthetic of simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty. Like other Japanese aesthetics terms, such as iki and wabi-sabi, shibui can apply to a wide variety of subjects, not just art or fashion. Wiki. A

Our favorite bike race was in Solvang, the Gourmet Century. My wife new the only way to get me in a bike race was to have gourmet attached to it. We did not practice Shibumi, though. It was anything, but effortless!

Hi Ron and Alexandra:
I'd say that shibumi is an apt word for those beautiful birch trees. I loved seeing the white birch (there is a gray variety too) all over New England, especially mixed in with all the pine trees. So nice to also have them here although there are less common.

Anything that is Shibumi is noble and fulfilling in a manner that is not shaped exclusively by analytical thought. Simply put, a state of great refinement underlying commonplace appearances.
