Monday Musings: Satori--Going Out of Your Mind!

Ron and I have recently been refocused on Zen Buddhism, which is also known as Japanese Buddhism.  We like their words which explain the concepts of beauty and meditation.

Satori (悟り) is a Japanese Buddhist term for awakening, "comprehension; understanding". It is derived from the Japanese verb satoru. In the Zen Buddhist tradition, satori refers to the experience of kenshō, "seeing into one's true nature ". Ken means "seeing," shō means "nature" or "essence". Wikipedia

In Western terms Satori is meditation and mindfulness.  In scientific terms it is an increase in Alpha Waves in the brain brought about by meditation and mindfulness. The result is deep relaxation. Whichever one you choose, in our opinion, it is necessary to maintaining one's health and well being.

"Waking up to who you are requires letting go of who you imagine yourself to be"

~ Alan Watts

“I have realized that the past and future are real illusions, that they exist in the present, which is what there is and all there is.”

Alan Watts

Like mindfulness, meditation is a form of focus.  Our Qigong teacher rings a bell, and says, "listen to the sound follow it as it fades, listen to the sounds of birds, cars, outside noises, it is the universe breathing!"

Whether you focus on a mantra ( a sentence that you repeat over and over again) or a sound like we do (the sound of the heater in the morning, or the sound of birds),or the sound of the waves as we walk on the shore of the ocean, the mind rests.

"Stop measuring days by degree of productivity and start experiencing them by degree of presence."

~ Alan Watts

It does not turn off, it rests.  Thoughts come and go like clouds without meaning or commentary.  Quite often, for Ron and I, a clear thought comes forth to inspire the day and sets the tone.

I write these posts, from a thought that comes to me in meditation.  Satori was on mind as I went to sleep last night.  I love the Japanese word, it flows easily off my tongue and resonates in my mind.

"To go out of your mind at least once a day is tremendously important. By going out of your mind, you come to your senses."

~ Alan Watts

Alan Wilson Watts was a British writer and speaker known for interpreting and popularizing Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism for a Western audience. Wikipedia.

Happy Monday, Ron and Alexandra- What a wonderful post to begin the week. I have always loved the graceful beauty of the Japanese language and ceremonies.  I do think that there is so much to be gained from turning off extraneous -manmade sounds and listening to nature-the lapping of waves on the boat or the birds outside your window.

Kathy Streib There is so much wisdom in the Japanese culture.  One my favorite things is that you never open a gift in front of the giver.  It is opened later, and you accept the gift with both hands.  If the giver gives you an original piece of art like a handmade ceramic or blown glass, you are supposed the find the slight  imperfection in it, and report it back.  The slight imperfection is usually well hidden to prove that it handmade...So much charm in that.  A

James Dray I have always been of the opinion, that if you know one word of another language, even thank you and hello, you are closer to understanding that human.  If you can speak another language, you had another soul to yourself another layer of understanding ...we all speak real estate, that is a language, the game of golf that you love is another layer...A
