Over the past 90 years, Simi Valley has been the location for thousands of movie productions, commercials, and television productions. One of the larger film productions that have taken place in Simi Valley happened back in 2002/2003 with The Cat in the Hat movie.

According to an article from the Independent Record:

“Between Moorpark and Simi — in a house pink and blue — the Cat will come soon with Thing One and Thing Two.

The houses are ready, the neighbors don’t know, but the scene is now set to start filming the
show. Mike Myers will be there, in costume at that. But this time around, he’s the Cat in the Hat.

Production on the movie version of Dr. Seuss’ classic ‘The Cat in the Hat,’ the ultimate mom’s-gonna-kill-us children’s fantasy, is due to start Monday at Butler Ranch near Moorpark.

The sight of nearly two dozen narrow 30-foot-tall houses — painted pink with blue roofs —
turns quite a few heads as motorists spot the 6-acre movie set in the middle of a local horse
ranch.

‘I’ve gotten at least a dozen calls and e-mails from people asking about the new development that seemed to spring up overnight,’ said Moorpark Mayor Patrick Hunter.”
The set for this movie was built between Madera and Collins in Moorpark. In total, 24 houses (each 26 feet square and 52 feet tall) were constructed in Simi Valley.
Here are a photo and a clip of the mini-city that the film crew created:

This version of The Cat in the Hat came out on Nov 8th, 2003 to a weekend box office gross of $38.3 million. For the time, this was a fairly good opening weekend gross. Poor reviews would be the cause for its lackluster box office performance afterward.

When it comes to the 24 homes that were constructed for the film, they would be torn down in late 2003 and early 2004.
